SARS operatives detained us for 8 days over land dispute - Ogun residents

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad,
Abuja, have been accused of unlawfully arresting
one Abdulrahman Abdulkabir and two other
residents of Makun Sagamu, Ogun state.
Chief Idowu Sanya and Dauda Owolabi were said
to have been arrested and detained alongside
Abdulkabir for eight days, Punch reports.
notes that Sanya alleged that the
operatives chained him to their operational
vehicle from Sagamu to Abuja, adding that the
policemen released them after spending eight
days in custody, telling them to go home and
make peace over an expanse of land in the
community.
He said: “ On Monday, March 24, 2018, I visited the palace
of the Ewusi of Makun. Shortly after I left the palace
around 10pm, some SARS operatives intercepted me. They
ordered me into their vehicle. They also arrested two other
residents (Abdulkabir and Owolabi).

“None of us knew why we were arrested until they finally
took us to Abuja. It was more like abduction, as they never
produced any warrant of arrest. They first drove us to the
SARS office in Magbon, Abeokuta, and put us in a cell for
three days. On Thursday morning, they took us to Abuja.
“My right arm was chained to the body of the vehicle with
handcuffs all through the journey from Sagamu to Abeokuta
and from Abeokuta to Abuja. We later discovered that our
arrest was instigated by some land grabbers. The policemen
told us to go home and make peace with them.”
Recounting his ordeal, Abdulkabir said: “They
didn’t even allow me to put on my clothes before taking me
away. I was in a pair of boxer shorts. Throughout the three
days we spent in the Magbon cell, I slept on the floor,
wearing nothing but the boxer shorts. The most painful part
of the story was that the policemen discovered that my
name was not listed in an alleged petition that led to our
arrest when we got to Abuja."
The third victim, Owolabi, said that the
operatives did not give them food throughout the
three days they spent in Magbon.
ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the police public
relations officer in Ogun state, said that the SARS
operatives were not from the state command.
He said: “The SARS operatives are not from our
command. Maybe somebody wrote a petition against them
in Abuja and policemen came from there to arrest them.
But it is not possible for the police to arrest and detain
somebody for days without telling the person the nature of
offence committed. They should not be economical with the
truth. The police will even show you the petition written
against you, which I believe those policemen did.”

 previously reported that 32
officers of the Special Anti-robbery Squad (SARS)
were arrested and under investigations for
various cases of misconduct. The officials were
locked up in various cells in Abuja and were
allowed to see their families or lawyers.
A source claimed that the order for the officers
to be arrested and transferred to Abuja came
from the inspector general of police, Idris
Ibrahim.

Minimum wage of N96,000 is achievable if government is serious - ULC

The United Labour Congress and the Nigerian
Labour Congress have called on the federal

respect, saying that the development of the
country rests on Nigerian workers.
The call was made during the parallel workers'

The chairman of the ULC, Lagos state chapter,
said that Nigerian workers deserved better than
they were presently getting, adding that the
proposal for a minimum wage of N96, 000 was
achievable.
He said: "The government can pay the N96,000 being
demanded by organised labour as minimum wage, Nigerian
workers can no longer allow themselves to be treated as
slaves.
The choice of N96,000 as a minimum wage was arrived at
after all key “factors and indicators” were taken into
consideration. We are concerned about the welfare of
Nigerian workers. That is why we proposed a minimum
wage of N96,000 after looking at all key indices and factors.
We know that government can pay the money if it is
serious. But beyond that, we are even ready for
negotiation.”

7m people die every year from exposure to polluted air - WHO

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on
Wednesday, May 2, said seven million people die
every year from exposure to polluted air.
According to a WHO report, ambient, or outdoor
air pollution alone caused some 4.2 million
deaths in 2016, while household air pollution
from cooking with polluting fuels and
technologies caused an estimated 3.8 million
deaths in the same period.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that
those figures are on a par with the number of
deaths recorded in an earlier study published
two years ago.

accept 5% petrol levy - Workers fume
WHO said air pollution levels remain
dangerously high in many parts of the world.
New data showed that nine out of 10 people
breathe air containing high levels of pollutants.
According to the report, more than 90% of air
pollution-related deaths occur in low- and
middle-income countries, mainly in Asia and
Africa, followed by low- and middle-income
countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region,
Europe and the Americas.
“Air pollution threatens us all, but the poorest and most
marginalized people bear the brunt of the burden,” WHO
Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
said.
“It is unacceptable that over 3 billion people – most of them
women and children – are still breathing deadly smoke
every day from using polluting stoves and fuels in their
homes.
“If we don’t take urgent action on air pollution, we will
never come close to achieving sustainable development,”
he said.

The WHO recognises that air pollution is a
critical risk factor for non-communicable
diseases, causing an estimated one-quarter (24%)
of all adult deaths from heart disease, 25% from
strokes, 43% from chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease and 29% from lung cancer.
 previously reported that the United
Nations International Children's Fund (UNICEF)
said that only one out of four Nigerian children
receive recommended vaccination annually
across Nigeria.
The international agency said, although Nigeria
has made great strides in reducing the death of
children under the age of five from 158 to 120
per 1,000 births between 2011 and 2016, the
coverage of the main vaccines offered through
routine immunization has declined.
UNICEF in a statement said the immunization
coverage for pentavalent vaccine between the 36
states varies dramatically from 80% in Lagos to
3% in Sokoto.

Breaking: Police IGP snubs Senate invitation again

The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Kpotum
Idris, today, Wednesday, April 2, snubbed the
Nigerian Senate yet again.
The Senate had summoned IGP Idris to appear
before it over the recent killings and security
situation across the country.
NAIJ.com previously reported that a group, the
Democratic Youth Congress (DYC) has faulted the
Senate for inviting the Inspector General of
Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, to appear before it
personally to explain the circumstances leading
to the arrest of Melaye.
The group, in a statement by Kassim Muhammad
Kassim, the national chairman of DYC for Buhari
2019 at the weekend argued that it was Senator
Melaye that should be called to order and not
the IGP, who was following the constitutional
mandate given to him to maintain peace and
order in the country.

Workers oppose 5% petrol levy, power sector privatisation

introduction of 5% levy on petrol by the federal
government, Punch reports.
The workers under the Trade Union Congress
(TUC) said the union is totally against the levy on
Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) which is contained
in the Petroleum Industry Governance Bill
recently passed by the National Assembly.
Commemorating the 2018 May Day, the president
of the TUC, Bobboi Kaigama, said the
privatisation of the power sector had failed.

Kaigama said it is important to query why the
imposition of the levy is coming at a time when
Nigerians are going through pains surviving.
He said: “ We are against the five per cent fuel levy hidden
in the PIGB. The question is, why is it coming now that
Nigerians are going through excruciating pains from the
mismanagement of the economy?
“What is the necessity of the marginal levy when Nigeria
has not fully broken the shackles of fuel scarcity? If the
National Assembly cannot lessen our burden, they should
not make it worse. That levy has to be removed
immediately. The excuse that the money will be used to fund
the Petroleum Equalisation Fund is not tenable.
“The investors have failed in most of their undertakings so
far and are even arm-twisting the government to cover up
their failure. We urge the government to hold these
investors to account and stop treating them with kid gloves.

“They must comply with the agreement they signed in their
contracts with the Bureau of Public Enterprises. Excuses
must stop. The contracts should be reviewed immediately.
We need real investors to take over the power sector. This
so-called privatisation has failed."
Meanwhile, NAIJ.com earlier reported that the
Bauchi state governor, Mohammed Abubakar
had said the state government would not be able
to pay the proposed N66,500 as minimum wage
to civil servants.

revenue.

She also reacted to a statement made by Davido
who claimed that he has been dating Chioma for
five years. She noted that he had publicly
disrespected her by flaunting other women on
social media.

"All over my timeline... it’s Davido, Chioma and Porsche of
45 million that I see.
Most of the girls are tapping into the blessing while the guys
are shouting “Chioma cooks day and night for David... but
you don’t want to cook for your guy”. I’m just here
wondering if we are all processing the same information.
Davido says he has been dating Chioma for 5 years. Within
the 5 years, he got 2 different women pregnant... had 2
children by them... had other girlfriends he flaunted
openly... suddenly all these things don’t matter any more
and everyone is shouting ASSURANCE... GOALS!!!
What goals exactly? To be openly disrespected for years
while in a relationship, and suddenly he decides the love is
driving him crazy? To keep your relationship low key for
years while flaunting other girls and one day he realizes his
mistake and decides he wants to give you lifetime assurance
and a Porsche??? What exactly is the goals here??
Someone posted “Dear girls, it’s better to be the main chick
than the side chick. After 2 baby mamas, Davido still came
back to his girl. Love is real.” Really??? Because of Porsche,
exotic trips and shopping? Suffering has confused all of us
in this country.
To all the girls looking for their own Davido, be careful
what you wish for. If this is the precedent you want for
your relationship I applaud you. We must be mindful of the
type of prayers we say.
Your faithful boyfriend that sends you 10k when you need it
is goals. Don’t be deceived by the glitz and glamour. What is
the context? What is the content?
May we not crave relationships that will break our hearts
and belief in humanity just for some temporary glamour. To
all those who are in real love relationships... you all are the
MVP!!! Keep winning. Love over everything."

Codeine Abuse: Senate President, Bukola Saraki says,

'It's everybody’s problem'
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in a statement by his Chief
Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, Saraki stated that

documentaries like ‘Sweet Sweet Codeine’ are real-life
attestations on the need for Nigeria to take its drug abuse
problem more seriously.
“The widespread nature of this substance abuse problem in
Nigeria is why the Senate convened the stakeholder
Roundtable in Kano in December. Even though I have been
working on this issue for a few months now, watching the
BBC documentary was another eye-opener. Nigerians can
now see that if care is not taken, we could be sitting on a
catastrophe. We cannot all just fold our arms and expect this
issue to fix itself. This is everybody’s problem" the President
of the Senate said.
He continues to say, 'as things stand, following the
Roundtable on Drug Abuse that held in Kano in December
2017, we have already developed a draft Legislative
framework for the control of narcotics and psychotropic
substances and the provision of mental health and substance
abuse services in Nigeria. With the Drug Control Bill that we
are set to introduce, the mandate of the National Drug Law
Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the National Agency for
Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) and other
relevant law enforcement and other regulatory bodies will be
strengthened to eradicate the illicit production, and trafficking
of controlled substances".

“While the Mental Health Bill will ensure the availability of
mental health and substance abuse services in every state, as
well as guarantee the enforcement of minimum standards of
care for people with mental health disorders. This is because,
we cannot continue like this. We cannot continue to have one
psychiatrist for every 1.6million Nigerians and expect this
substance abuse problem to go away. This legislative
framework that we are preparing recognizes the low number
of mental health practitioners in the country, and works to
rectify that problem by ensuring that quality mental health and
substance abuse services are available for this underserved
segment of the population.”

Nigerian youths need to maximise opportunities in Agriculture - President Buhari

President Buhari has reiterated his call on youths in Nigeria
to seize opportunities in agriculture, a sector of the
economy he said is already proving to be the bedrock of the
nation’s new economy.
Speaking on Monday at Blair House, Washington DC after his
White House engagements with President Donald Trump,
the President, at a meeting the Chief Executive Officers of
six American agricultural companies and their Nigerian
counterparts including Aliko Dangote and John
Coumantaros, again lamented the challenges of the
country’s youth bulge, with “sixty per cent of the population
below 30 years.”
He said the country must help the young people to plan their
future and urged them to explore opportunities easily
accessible in agriculture because, as he said, “agriculture is
the future.” While stressing that planning in Nigeria must
take into consideration the factors of climate and a bulging
youth population, President Buhari also promised the
support of his administration in the promotion of skill
development, innovation and entrepreneurship among the
young population.
According to him, “We realized, rather belatedly that we
ought to have been investing in agriculture. We are now
aiming at food security because of our large population. Our
youths, the ones who have gone to school and even those
that have not, should go to the farm, to earn respect for
themselves. Agriculture is providing jobs for millions of our
citizens and we are doing well towards the attainment of
food security and jobs. The media may not appreciate the
work we are doing but we will shock them by the success
we are recording.”
President Buhari welcomed the several investment
proposals being put in place by the Americans and their
Nigerian counterparts. Among those brought up for
discussions were the three million tons fertilizer by Dangote,
the largest in Africa coming on stream in July, to be
followed by another one to produce 1.4 million tons of the
commodity; a large-scale modern seed production
company, and weed and pest management and chemicals
products companies by the Americans.
Similarly, the Burger King food chain with plans to integrate
local farmers in livestock production; the Heinz tomatoes
production, with backward integration of Nigerian tomato
farmers; and another company coming to set up a local
branch to facilitate merchandising of commodities, in effect
establishing a link between the Nigerian producers and the
global market.
A tractor manufacturing company, John Deer, also unfolded
a plan for an assembly plant to produce 10,000 tractors in
four years in Nigeria. They will all come with jobs for
Nigerians. In a second business meeting same day,
President Buhari brought together Nigerian businessmen
and their American counterparts from the U.S Chamber of
Commerce and the Corporate Council on Africa, (CCA.)
The U.S Chamber, on behalf of its three million member-
companies which included General Electric, Chevron,
Proctor and Gamble and Boeing aircraft manufacturers,
expressed happiness with improved security in the Niger
Delta, reforms in the economy leading to ease in doing
business, and the war the administration is waging against
corruption.
Several of the oncoming plans were disclosed to the
President who demanded concrete plans and an aggressive
timetable for their actualization. He envisaged that the
investment schemes will lead to a lot of new opportunities
for the Nigerian youth.

living under a bridge and blamed her "homophobic parents"
for her current struggle.
"We've been homeless for a month due to homophobic

hospitals, the food banks, the LGBTQ community shelters
and all of them just don't give a s***," Ng said.
"We don't know what to do at this point. We just want to let
people know what's going on because at this point it seems

FG Bans production of Cough Syrups containing codeine in Nigeria

Following the inreasing rate of its gross abuse, the Federal
Ministry of Health has directed the National Agency for
Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to ban
with immediate effect further issuance of permits for the
importation of codeine as active pharmaceutical ingredient
for cough preparations.
The Minister of Health, Professor Isaac Adewole made this
known in Abuja today May 1st. According to Adewole, the
directive became necessary due to the gross abuse codeine
usage has been subjected to in the country, especially in
Northern Nigeria.
In its stead, the minister said codeine containing cough
syrups should be replaced with dextromethorphan which is
less addictive.
He also directed the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria,
(PCN) and NAFDAC to supervise the recall for labelling and
audit trailing of all codeine containing cough syrups in the
country, while he has also banned sales of Codeine
containing cough syrup without prescription across the
country.

Security challenge Rivers state blamed FG

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has blamed Nigeria’s

security challenge on political interference by the Federal
Government. Wike said this on Monday when he received
participants of Senior Executive Study Group Three from the
National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS,
Kuru at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
“What we have seen in most cases is that security lapses are
a result of political interference,” he said. He claimed that
insecurity is fallout of the political interference of the
Federal Government in the operation of security agencies.
The governor added that Rivers State is working hard to
handle security challenges adding that Rivers State residents
are peace makers. Commenting on the Neighbourhood
Safety Corps, Governor Wike said that the agency was
established to complement the work of Federal Security
Agencies.
He added that the organisation was fashioned in line with
an existing model in Lagos State under the leadership of
respected retired military, police and paramilitary senior
officers.
