If you force the Queen to miss Ascot, don't be surprised if she turns up in a giant EU hat

Was it an accident, this nakedly pro-Brussels bonnet? One suspects we will never know the truth, but given one commenter on the Daily Mail website was sufficiently enraged to describe the Queen herself as a “left liberal luvvie traitor!!!” we probably do not need to.

It has long been known that the endurance of constitutional monarchy at the head of the British legislative system rests on the sacred principle of never, ever, ever pissing about with Royal Ascot and and never before has it been more gravely tested.
Not once in the broad sweep of sixty five long years of British history has Her Majesty the Queen come close to compromising the fundamental constitutional tenet of political neutrality of the monarchy, but tell her she might not make it in time for the Jersey Stakes at half two and do not, frankly, be surprised if the response you get is “Whatever you say, but one will not be wearing one’s crown on one’s head, one will be wearing a massive EU flag-hat instead.”
Was it an accident, this nakedly pro-Brussels bonnet? One suspects we will never know the truth, but given one commenter on the Daily Mail website was sufficiently enraged to describe the Queen herself as a “left liberal luvvie traitor!!!” we probably do not need to.
How peculiar it must have been, for that peculiar band of around nine individuals across the entire country, who voted to leave the European Union over grave concerns over “sovereignty”, to see the return on their democratic investment, there on their television screens, in the form of the sovereign herself, wearing not the sovereign crown but a whacking great big blue hat decked out with a full circumference of bright yellow buttons.
It was the palace, after all, that had insisted on a “dress-down” “low key” state opening, placing severe restrictions on the numbers of Maltravers Herald Extraordinaries and Rouge Dragon Pursuivants who usually accompany the big hat made of diamonds on its customary journey from one palace to another, or its wearer on her customary journey from a third palace to the second.
That there were large number of empty seats in the Upper Chamber was unfortunate, given the House of Lords has approximately six times as many members as actual seats, but the Queen wasn’t the only one with a diary clash. We can only assume, on the hottest June day since 1976, not to mention the #DayofRage protests, a number of noble lords decided they had more enjoyable things to do, be it repose at their leisure at their country seats, or more likely, don their V for Vendetta masks and smash up the local HSBC.
One such chap who had no such luck was Prince Charles. Not only was it dress down day but bring your child to work day, with the nation’s favourite perma-heir enlisted to replace his unwell father, and looking never more like an angry nine year old, dragged into daddy’s accountancy firm for the day while everyone else is out in the sunshine playing Pokemon Go.
It is customary, on such occasions, for the members of Her Majesty’s press corps to look down upon the Upper House from the gallery, searching for the old familiar faces, then divert to Wikipedia to reacquaint oneself with the weird and wonderful tales of venality, greed, corruption and criminality that have propelled so many of its members to their elevated realm at the head of British society, but there was simply no time this time.
Her Majesty was over and done in scarcely five minutes. The dementia tax gone, the return of grammar schools gone, the free vote on fox hunting vanished, the free school meals axe left unwielded. All that remained was the vague outline of a Brexit that, in the blazing heat, had gone from hard to decidedly mushy.
The Queen was out the door in a flash, and off putting the Royal in Royal Ascot with a full half an hour to spare before the first race, the EU blue hat exchanged for another in EU yellow.
The history books offer no precedent for an ageing, powerless leader, deciding finally sending out coded messages to the people via daring headwear choices, but it is 2017, the single worst thing to happen since 2016 - so anything is possible. We can only hope there is more to come.
Was it an accident, this nakedly pro-Brussels bonnet? One suspects we will never know the truth, but given one commenter on the Daily Mail website was sufficiently enraged to describe the Queen herself as a “left liberal luvvie traitor!!!” we probably do not need to.

Former Speaker Commends Buhari For Restoring Nigeria’s Image

Former Speaker commends Buhari for restoring Nigeria’s image
A former Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly, Alhaji Aliyu Muduru, said on Wednesday that the nation’s international image had been redeemed significantly by  President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration .
Muduru, who is still a serving member of Katsina state Assembly, made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said the global community’s appreciation of the giant strides recorded by President Buhari’s administration in fighting Boko Haram and corruption, was an indication that the administration was on course in its chosen mandate.
Muduru said the current economic hardship facing the country was as a result of moral crisis which has eaten deep into the fabric of the society.
“ We have every reason to be hopeful that the current work being done by the leadership of this country, under the incorruptible President Buhari, will rescue the country.
“ In spite of the difficulties that the country may be going through, one thing is gratifying; our country is blessed with a leadership that commands the respect of the international community, “ he said.
The lawmaker , therefore, urged Nigerians to remain committed to the Nigerian nation and be confident in the ability of Buhari to steer the country through its turbulent times.
Muduru, who appealed to Nigerian youths to work for the greatness of the country and pray for its development, expressed concern over lack of unity among the youths.
He said that the youths must take active part in the  electoral process, in order to steer the country to the new level they desire.
According to him, the giant strides being recorded in Katsina state is because 65 per cent of the lawmakers are youths and Gov. Aminu Masari is expanding the political space for youths to secure more positions in government.(NAN)

Nasarawa State Government To Pay Non Striking Civil Servants Only

Nasarawa government has directed that only civil servants who defiled the ongoing strike should be paid their June salaries.
A statement signed by Mr Thomas Ogiri, State Head of Civil Service, on Wednesday in Lafia, said the position was in line with the labour law.
“It states that, any worker who takes part in a strike is not entitled to any wages or remuneration throughout the period of the strike,’’ he said.
According to him, only civil servants that still reports to their duty post and are not participating in the ongoing strike, are eligible to receive salaries.
He also directed permanent secretaries and accounting officers of MDAs to take all necessary steps to ensure immediate table payment of June 2017 salaries to deserving staff.
In his reaction, Ahmed Naibi, Secretary of the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), said the government does not have the right to invoke such policy, adding that the workers involved were not on legitimate strike.
He added that this is part of measures by the state government to intimidate the officials of the union and its members into suspending the strike.
According to him, government can only invoke such policy if workers absconded from duty for no just course.
Naibi added that the law has given the organised labour the right to embark on strike to press home their demands.
“The union is taken inventory of the few staff still reporting to their duty post and would sanction them at the most appropriate time,” he said.
He, therefore, called on the workers to ignore whatever threat by the government and continue to remain at home until the government meets all their demands.
The state’s organised labour made up of TUC and Labour congress had embarked on strike since May 12, demanding for payment of outstanding salary arrears and promotion.

Photos: Thai woman who claims to have dated over 5000 men, launches online course on how to catch rich white men

A Thai woman who advertised herself as having dated over 5,000 rich men is currently trending after launching an online course designed to guide other Thai women in catching and keeping rich foreign guys.
The woman from Khon Kaen, Thailand, who calls herself Praiya Suriya on Facebook, is opening a “club” that recruits eligible Thai women for her “rich businessman friends.”

For a fee of THB14,000 (about USD410) for VIP access, Praiya will set her “club members” up with either “Caucasian or Middle Eastern” men, with online coaching on how to ask them for money and be more confident in bed.
The coaching will be done within a private group on the LINE messaging app. According to Praiya’s automatic message on LINE, here’s what VIP members will learn:

But other women actually idolize Praiya, leaving messages of support on her Facebook page.
“Why is this even an issue? She didn’t force you to become a member. Those who want a rich man but can’t get one can register if they’re pleased to do so,” a Thai woman said.
A lot of women say they’re saving up to take Praiya’s dating course.
“THB14,000 is not expensive at all for what you’ll get. Let me save money for this first. I’m 33, speak a little English, and have kids. I want to have someone,” another woman said.
After the story received attention in local media, Praiya said that she has received so many private messages that she could not respond as quickly as she’d like.
In one of her live videos, Praiya added that she does not just accept anyone in her course, she only wants to work with women who are really serious about becoming a gold digger.
“Some of you are mental. I don’t wanna hook you up no matter how much you pay. I wanna select members who are serious about this—gettingrich.

inches away.
His palm was about to touch her cheeks when the lights came on.
Interval
Immediately they moved back to their original position and acted as if nothing had
happened. Aleesha started curling a strand of her hair with her fingers while Akash
stretched his body pretending to relax. They looked at each other and exchanged innocent
smiles.
‘Don’t move. I’ll be back in a few minutes with your surprise,’ Akash said getting up
from his seat.
‘What’s it, Akash? Come on. Tell me. Where are you going?’ Aleesha almost pleaded
this time. She was losing all her patience. Akash blinked his eyes and asked her to wait
for a moment.
Aleesha took out the Bisleri water bottle from her bag. Just as she was about to take a
sip, she saw her name flash on the movie screen. She could not believe her eyes.
Is that real? I mean how? Why? What’s next? Is this the surprise Akash was talking
about? Did he go outside for this? Her mind was preoccupied with these thoughts
while her eyes looked for Akash. He couldn’t be seen anywhere. She looked back at the
screen and didn’t dare to look anywhere else. She felt like her heart had stopped beating.
Aleesha! Aleesha! Aleesha! The text appeared on the screen.
I don’t know what will be your reaction after watching this short movie. But I am
sure you won’t hit me. The text flashed on the screen one after the other.
I’ve always been someone who is always at a loss for words. But, today I felt like
telling you everything to lighten my heart. It’s for the very first time in my life that I
am taking this step and have dared to do something like this. I would like to tell you
that you have wooed me from the very first meeting. I want to let you know that I am
madly in love with you and I promise you that I will do my best in making you feel
loved and secure with me. I don’t know what you think of me, but you really are very
special for me. According to me, you are the most beautiful girl in this world. Megan
Fox is no match for you. The stars lose their shine when I think about your smile.
I’ve seen dreams of me kissing you and have spent lonely nights thinking of you. If
only you could hear my heart’s voice, you would have known that I will love you like
no one else. The days have passed since I feel your love in every song. Now it’s time to
say what I have kept hidden for so long. I want you to stay by my side. Aleesha, I love
you! I love you so much that I cannot express it enough. I have a small surprise to let
you know that you are my life. I have never felt so good.
A photograph of Akash and Aleesha appeared on the screen with ‘Made for each
other and together forever’ written on it.
Akash was standing near the entrance door and observing Aleesha all through the
clip. Her happiness knew no bounds. She came down immediately when she saw Akash
standing near the screen. She stood in front of him. They looked at each other for a
moment. Akash was the first one to break the silence.
‘You won’t say anything?’
‘I am speechless, Akash. When did you plan all of this? I never expected that
someone would ever do this to me. I am flattered. I still can’t believe you actually did
this. You had kept our photograph too, the one which we had taken in McDonald’s,’ she
said, and Akash came close and held her hands.
‘I wanted to tell you about my feelings in person, but thought of making it special and
memorable. I always feared telling you about it because I feared losing you as a friend. I
consider myself really lucky to have a friend like you. But now I want to tell you the
truth. Each moment away from you feels like a thousand deaths. I would rather lose you
and live in sorrow than spend the rest of my life wondering what if…’ Akash stopped for
a moment and said, ‘I hope you will not hate me. But what choice did I have? You are
the most wonderful girl I have ever met and not falling in love with you was never an
option for me. I love you, Aleesha.’
He had finally expressed his love and he felt on top of the world. Aleesha kept

FG appeals Saraki's acquittal by CCT

The Federal Government has approached the Court of Appeal in Abuja to file an appeal against the judgment of the Code of Conduct Tribunal CCT that discharged and acquitted Senate President Bukola Saraki of 18 counts of false asset declaration and other related offences.

The tribunal had on June 14th, dismissed the case on the grounds that the prosecution team did not provide enough evidence to substantiate its claims that Saraki did not declare his assets when he was governor of Kwara state.

In the notice of appeal filed yesterday and signed by the lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs and an Assistant Chief State Counsel in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Pius Akutah, the Federal Government argued that the judgment is unwarranted, unreasonable and against the weight of evidence. “The judgment of the lower tribunal is unwarranted, unreasonable and against the weight of evidence. It is unconstitutional and without jurisdiction.

By the provisions of paragraphs 11 (2), (3) and (13) of Part 1, 5th Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), once the Code of Conduct form filled by the public officer is investigated and found to be false or that some assets are beyond the legitimate income of the public officer or that the assets were acquired by means of corrupt practices, the public officer concerned is deemed to have breached the Code of Conduct and it is for him to show to the tribunal that there is no infraction in the form.

The honourable tribunal wrongly placed the onus of proof on the prosecution contrary to paragraphs 11 (2), (3) and (13) of Part 1, 5th Schedule to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) clearly excluded the presumption of innocence on the allegation of infraction of the Code of Conduct by public officers and the Tribunal wrongly applied the presumption of innocence contrary to the constitutional requirement. The tribunal’s decision is unconstitutional and without jurisdiction.

The learned members of the tribunal, in their consideration of no-case submission, failed in their duty to look at the offences charged, the ingredients of the offence and the evidence adduced by the prosecution before upholding the respondent’s no-case submission. The learned members of the tribunal failed to analyse and evaluate the evidence of prosecution witnesses before reaching their conclusion that there is no case made out against the respondent.

The tribunal failed in its duty to point out the material evidence adduced by the prosecution witnesses touching the ingredients of the offence charged that was discredited by the respondent’s counsel during cross-examination. The learned members of the tribunal failed to consider and apply the decision of the Supreme Court in Daboh v State (1977) 5 SC 197 at 315, where the Supreme Court held that if the submission is based on discredited evidence, such discredited evidence must be apparent on the face of the record and that if such is not apparent, then the submission is bound to fail.

The learned members of the tribunal failed to point out any apparent discredited evidence on the face of the record before it upheld the submission of a no case. The tribunal failed in its duty to point out the essential ingredients of the offences charged and the evidence adduced by the prosecution to show that the available evidence could not establish the ingredients of the offences.

The tribunal failed to apply the provisions of sections 302 and 303 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 in upholding the no-case submission made by the respondent.” In the second grounds, the appellant held that in upholding the no-case submission, the tribunal ought to have only discharged Saraki, but wrongfully went ahead to discharge and acquit the Senate President.

The notice of appeal stated “The power of the Tribunal when upholding a no-case submission is to discharge the defendant and not to acquit him. By section 302 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015, the only order the Tribunal can make when a no-case submission is upheld is an order of discharge and not acquittal.”

The Federal government also faulted claims by the CCT that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, which investigated the case against Saraki, failed to invite him for interrogation before charging him. It contended that the CCT’s finding was against the evidence adduced by the prosecution.
