Pastor jailed for holding female parishioners down so minister could sexually assault them
A pastor has been jailed for helping a church minister to sexually assault female parishioners.
Laurence Peterson, 59, blocked the doors to prevent escape and held the victims down as Rev John Wilson, 70, performed "grotesque" sexual exorcisms on members of the congregation. Peterson had frequently blocked the victims' escape and barricaded one newly-wed bride inside a prayer room as Wilson sexually assaulted her while her husband desperately tried to enter the room.
A jury heard Peterson, of Eric Street, Keighley, may have also laced the women's tea with drugs to make them more compliant as Wilson sexually attacked them in the name of performing exorcism. The attacks took place at the Liberty Pentecostal Church, in Keighley, West Yorks, over three decades and have left the victims mentally scarred.
A jury at Bradford Crown Court found Peterson guilty of counts of conspiracy to commit indecent assault and two charges of aiding and abetting Wilson to commit sex acts. Rev Wilson was jailed for 21 years earlier for a string of sex offences against six women. Mary Wilson, his wife, was found guilty of aiding and abetting her husband and was handed a 22 month suspended sentence. Mary, 79, sat in the public gallery today alongside Peterson's supporters from the church for the sentencing.
Judge David Hatton QC told Peterson he was satisfied Wilson had been the principle offender. Judge Hatton said Peterson encouraged Wilson to carry out the bizarre 'internal ministries' to rid the women of demons and evil spirits.
"You encouraged the pretence, for pretence it was, on the jury's finding, that the violation that was occurring to them was necessary in their spiritual interests and well-being," said Judge Hatton.
Peterson was jailed for eight years and two months. He is on the sex offenders register and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order indefinitely. He is also banned from holding senior positions in religious bodies or perform ministries.

It takes just 24-hours to register your new company with CAC - President Buhari's aide, Dr Oduwole

It takes just 24-hours to register your new company with CAC - President Buhari
The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Industry, Trade & Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole has stated that registering a new company in Nigeria can now be done online and within 24 hours provided ALL procedures and requirements for online registration are met.
She made the statement while speaking at the one-day sensitization summit organized by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in Lagos Thursday. According to her; “This is a far cry from the 10 or more days it used to take in the past, which has resulted in significant time and cost savings.”
The CAC sensitization summit was declared open by the Acting Registrar/CEO of the CAC, Lady Azinge Azuka Obiageli who informed the audience that the event was one of many planned, as others would be taking place in Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt and other cities in the coming weeks.
According to her, the Corporate Affairs Commission would be phasing out manual company registration in an additional ten states, with a total phase-out expected in the nearest future. The summit was an opportunity for officials of the Corporate Affairs Commission, stakeholders, entrepreneurs, SME owners and members of the general public to engage on some of the reform initiatives being carried out by the commission as part of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council’s (PEBEC) 60-day National Action Plan 2.0 which was launched on the 3rd of October.
According to Dr Oduwole, the Enabling Business Environment Secretariat has been supporting the Corporate Affairs Commission to enhance efficiency in the process of business registrations, one of which has seen the CAC simplify its processes by condensing multiple forms previously required for registering a company into a single form - the CAC Form 1.1.
More importantly, company registration process is now exclusively online in Lagos, since the manual registration window closed earlier in the year. Manual registration portals have also been closed in Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, Port Harcourt and Enugu. These reforms were put in place to help businesses save cost and time while also removing rent-seeking opportunities from the process by reducing the need for human contact.

News of a youth corper having twins for me is false' - Governor Amosun

Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun today broke his silence about the news of a lady on National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) who was rumoured to have had twins for him in less than a year ago.

The governor said the rumour gained so much buzz that his mother-in-law had to call him to confirm if what she heard about a ‘second wife’ having twins was true or not.

Amosun who debunked the rumour as “concoction of idiots” at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, during a town hall meeting of stakeholders for the 2018 Budget preparation, said no lady or girlfriend had twins for him.

The meeting was organized by the state’s Ministry of Budget and Planning for the purpose of collecting the inputs of all stakeholders and build them into the preparation of the 2018 Executive Appropriation Bill but Amosun used the avenue to clear the air on rumours being circulated against him.

He said has been married to his wife, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, in the last 26 years and had never kept a girlfriend, let alone having one that delivered twins for him, adding that the twins issue also got to the notice of his wife.

The governor also vowed to smoke out those peddling rumours and falsehood against him, saying he would send them to jail where they rightly belonged.  He noted that those purveyors of falsehood could beat James Hadley Chase in “fiction concoction.”

Speaking at the ninth summit of the D-8, President Buhari said the private sector and business communities in the economic organization must be assisted with incentives to widen economic cooperation among member-states.

In his words,
‘‘as the D-8, we need to intensify our activities with a view to enhancing various measures and incentives introduced to promote trade and assist the business communities from Member States to invest in our countries and widen our cooperation. We need to work hard to establish integrated manufacturing structures and markets. I will like to reiterate the importance of increasing trade and investment among our Member States,’’ he said,
President Buhari also used the occasion of his speech to reiterate Nigeria’s commitment to international trade and development even as he affirmed the country’s readiness to host the Meeting of D8 Ministers of Industry from November 14 – 17 in Abuja.
Highlighting the attractive business and investment opportunities in the country, the President stressed the need for prospective investors to take advantage of the Federal Government’s new policies on trade facilitation.
‘‘Nigeria is committed to, and is actively pursuing a policy of trade and investment facilitation for growth. The gains from trade are reflected in greater competitiveness, improved productivity, job creation, consumer welfare and prosperity. Economies that grow fastest and at more sustainable rates are those that actively promote trade and attract investment. We are committed to creating an enabling environment and making Nigeria an attractive place for business and investment,’’ he said.
The President also urged D-8 member countries to support the efforts of the African Union (AU) to establish the first ever single market for trade in goods and services on the continent. He described the AU-backed Continental Free Trade Area for Africa as a ‘’win-win for all, including member countries of the D-8.’’
‘‘I am pleased to inform you of positive market developments currently in Africa, that will support our efforts as Members of the D-8 to enlarge our markets, facilitate our trade and investments, and develop our economies. In Africa, we are on the threshold of finalizing negotiations to establish the first ever Single Market for Trade in Goods and Services on our Continent, in the Continental Free Trade Area for Africa. This will be a win-win for all, including member countries of the D-8. As partners, I urge that we work together to support this effort of the African Union that will have a positive effect on global economic development and integration,’’ he said.
Earlier, President Buhari had congratulated the outgoing Chairman of D8, Pakistani government, and Dr. Seyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi, the outgoing Secretary-General, on their commitment and strong resolve to forge the organization ahead even in the face of serious challenges.
He also congratulated Turkey on assuming the new leadership of the economic organization. He assured D-8 leaders that Nigeria would continue to support the Secretariat in its assignments to achieve the visions and objectives of the organization.
