Nigeria Police Says Billionaire kidnapper 'Evans' Is In Police Custody, Did Not Vanish

The police on Saturday denied reports that suspected kidnap kingpin, Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike, had disappeared from police custody, weeks after his arrest dominated the headlines.

Hours after The Sun Newspapers emblazoned ‘Evans Vanishes’ on the front page of its Saturday edition, the police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, told PREMIUM TIMES the story was laced with “blatant falsehood”.
“Evans is intact in police custody,” Mr. Jimoh, a chief superintendent of police, said. “He did not vanish anywhere”.
Mr. Onwuamadike, 36, was arrested by anti-kidnapping officers in Lagos on June 10.
He was remanded in the custody in Lagos for weeks after his arrest amidst, during which he led officers to different locations he used for his criminal activities.
Citing unnamed sources, The Sun suggested that the suspect might have “escaped, or died” because he was nowhere to be found during a visit it made to the police command headquarters in Lagos.
The report sparked online uproar Saturday morning, after being republished by a slew of news blogs.
While acknowledging that Mr. Onwuamadike had indeed been moved from Lagos as indicated in The Sun’s report, a police source told PREMIUM TIMES Saturday that the move was put an end to the frivolous media coverage of his stay in custody for proper interrogation.
“We moved him from Lagos to Abuja this week,” the official said. “This will allow us to properly interrogate him.”
“But the notion that he had somehow disappeared from custody or that police were not willing to give updates about his whereabouts is simply absurd,” the official added.
Mr. Moshood said the police shifted the focus of attention away from Mr. Onwuamadike in order to extract all excruciating evidence needed to convict him of the charges that will be filed against him.
“A lot of cases had been traced to him that we’re currently investigating, as well,” Mr. Moshood said.
The spokesperson said a few other suspected collaborators of Mr. Onwuamadike had been arrested in recent weeks.
He said the police have a warrant that will enable them to keep Mr. Onwuamadike for the next three months without necessarily charging him to court.

While Ribadu reigned supreme at EFCC, he exercised a lot of power at the permission and pleasure of President Obasanjo. No toes too big for him to step on.
So when Obasanjo left office and Yar'Adua became the President, one of the first assignments of the very corrupt cabal that sponsored Yar'Adua to office was to get rid of him.
Enter Ibori and Saraki who both had major cases under investigation with EFCC. They instigated the administration of Yar'Adua to "promote" Ribadu out of relevance. The way Justice Katsina-Alu promoted Justice Salami and Obasanjo promoted
Okonjo-Iwealla out of relevance. They promoted to Assistant Inspector General of Police and sent him on a course to Kuru to go and collect what Yoruba people called "Arodan" (a non-existent material)
Ribadu made an attempt to resist them, but he was eventually run out of town and sent to exile.
The duo of Bukola Saraki and Ibori brought the "good girl" in whom they are well pleased, Farida Waziri, to head EFCC.
The Officer that was in charge of investigating the allegations of fraud and money laundering against Saraki at the time was Ibrahim Magu. The current Acting Chairman. He was described as a fine and uncompromising officer. He allegedly resisted the pressure from his boss Farida to drop the investigation of Saraki's case. When he refused, he was roped into a baseless case of keeping EFCC files in his house and redeployed to the regular Police duties.
As fate would have it, Yar'Adua got sick and died and Jonathan the erstwhile VP became the President.
Ribadu had played a major role in Jonathan uncommon route to Presidency. Odili was the man Obasanjo wanted to make the VP to Yar'Adua. But the vicious cabal of Ibori & co had used Ribadu to drop him and use Jonathan who the cabal considered a lesser threat to them.
When Jonathan eventually became the President, at the death of his boss, respite came for Ribadu. He was able to return to Nigeria from exile. They were able to convince Jonathan that he is not safe with Farida Waziri at EFCC. Farida was accused of being cozy with criminals and oppostion. In November of 2011, Jonathan fired Farida before her term had expired and Ibrahim Lamorde, who served as the second in command to Ribadu and a Ribadu loyalist was brought in to head the organization. A new wahala for Saraki and co.
Of course, he made attempt to reopen Saraki's corruption file by requesting that Magu be brought back to EFCC. When Police redeployment list came out, Magu name was missing. Pressure was mounted on Jonathan to intervene and he did. Magu came back to EFCC.
Somewhere along the line, the fight against corruption became paralyzed, maybe more, due to the body language of Jonathan the then President. So Saraki looked away from Lamorde and EFCC, he was busy consolidating and spreading his political tentacles.
In 2015 when Buhari became the President, Lamorde saw a new opportunity to go after Saraki. He contacted London Metropolitan Police for evidence to nail Saraki. Eight counts of fraud and money laundering were raised against him and his wife Toyin Saraki also came under investigation, the man in charge was Ibrahim Magu.
Saraki sensing danger, made his own move by getting a Senate Committee to investigate the EFCC, asking about what happened to over N5 billion assets recovered by the body. Propaganda war was raised to back it up, the effect was to ensure that Lamorde's term was not renewed and it worked.
While Saraki was busy plotting Lamorde's exit, other interested and powerful cabal in Presidency, like the NSA boss Babagana Monguno had other succession plans.
Before Saraki could heave a sigh of relief at getting rid of Lamorde, Ibrahim Magu, his arch-enemy at EFCC became the Chairman! Chai!
So Saraki had no choice than to go and wait for Magu at confirmation table. Information has it that those who sponsored Magu had skeletons in their own cupboards to cover up as well and Magu obliged on getting to the seat.
Then a new dynamic of power tussle in the Presidency enters into the plot. President Buhari, who has more stubbornness in him than managerial ability became a pawn in his own Presidency.
His father's Fulani clan represented by Mamman Daura and his mother's Kanuri's clan represented by NSA boss Babagana Monguno became locked in supremacy battle.
President Buhari instructed that a body should be set up to investigate arm's deal under Jonathan, Monguno insisted that no member of SSS would be involved. Only Military Officers and a representative of EFCC would be engaged.
Lawal Daura the DG of SSS was irked and he revolted, war of words and subterfuge were engaged.
The ADC of the President, Lt. Col. Mohammed Abubakar banned DSS operatives from inside Aso Rock and restricted them to the peripherals, the Chief Security Officer to the same President Abdulraham Mani issued a contrary order that the directive of ADC be ignored. Things fall apart at Presidency.
So it is not surprising that DSS joined with Saraki to shoot down Magu's confirmation by writing a letter to the Senate that Monguno's boy Magu is not fit and proper for the post. The Presidency played an own goal to Saraki's advantage.
Saraki has always have his signature on fraud insurgency and counterinsurgency since coming to our political space, after he was done with killing his corporate banking world.
When Danladi Umar of CCT who himself was under EFCC investigation, was pretending to be after Saraki, the EFCC gave him a clean bill of health against his own corruption investigation. The moment he freed Saraki, they shouted fa, fa, foooul! And dusted the same file they criminally retired. All of una dey craze.
A Senate President that was put in the dock for crime bordering on felony charge of pejury did not have enough honor in him to resign and an Acting Chairman of a corruption fighting body rejected by the Senate did not have enough integrity in him to step aside. The Chairman of the Tribunal sitting to judge the Senate President on false assets declaration was himself under investigation for corruption.
Ours is a strange country.
I personally blame the grossly incompetent and confused Presidency for all the mess, right from the administration of Yar'Adua.
I am more worried about the effect of these "ijo esin" (shameless dance) on our institution building than the personalities involved.
They may continue their "konkobelow" dance as much as they want, but the rule of law must be respected.
The Executive has failed us, the Legislature has failed us.
Follow the law Ag. President Osinbajo. Ask Magu to step aside. Bring a younger and tougher Police Officer with a reputation to protect. Pick that fine Police Officer Abba Kyari or kukuma bring back Ribadu and watch them scampering for safety.

Former President Jonathan's son in-law Godswill Edward reportedly shot in the head by unknown gunmen

Former president Jonathan's son-in-law, Prince Godswill Edward, was attacked by gunmen last night at his home. According to reports, the gunmen stormed his home at the State Housing Estate residence in the Calabar Municipal axis of Cross River State and was shot in the head.

Man strangles his eight months pregnant wife in Plateau

The police in Plateau state have arrested a 40 year old man, Victor Dashit, for allegedly strangling his eight months pregnant wife, Irene, at their farm in Jos, the state capital on June 2nd.

According to Family sources, the accused who is a staff of the National Industrial Court, Jos and his 33 year old wife who is a teacher, have been having issues after she found out he was having sex with their maid, Nora.

In May 2016, the deceased caught her husband in bed with Nora and afterwards sent her out of their home. Two months later, Nora, came back claiming that she was pregnant for Dashit. On the day the deceased died, she was on the farm with her husband. There they had an argument and he strangled her. He called his brother and claimed his wife had slumped and would need medical attention.

They rushed her to the Air Force Military Hospital in Jos where doctors tried to remove her baby but sadly, she died alongside the male child in her. Doctors in the hospital called in the police after finding marks on the neck of the deceased. Dashit was arrested by officers of the Anglo Police station in Jos where he confessed to strangling his wife.

Panicked Saraki Meets Osinbajo As Presidency Uncovers Senate’s Plot To Unseat Ag. President

Overwhelmed by negative reactions to some observations on the floor of the Senate, the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki on Thursday night held a secret meeting with the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
Investigation conducted by our correspondent revealed that the Senate President’s meeting with the Acting President was based on “some developments that occurred in the Senate during the week, including the suspension of consideration of further nominations by the Executive in protest against the retention of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, and the consequent threats of impeachment by some Senators.
A source said: “The Senate President met with the Acting President. He actually came alone and without the paraphernalia of his office to underscore his commitment to rapprochement between the Executive and the National Assembly.
“Saraki took the time to explain a few things to the Acting President, but the talks bordered on the clarification of a few misgivings, especially the rumor that he was planning to become the Acting President or instigating the Senate against the Presidency.
“He also took time to explain why the Senate wanted its resolutions respected in line with the principle of separation of powers.
“Above all, the session was actually frank.”
Findings made by our correspondent also showed that Thursday’s meeting between Osinbajo and Saraki was preceded by a visit the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, paid the Acting President on Wednesday night.
Before his visit to Osinbajo, Odigie-Oyegun was said to have reached out to the Senate leadership, asking them to prevail on warring senators to tread softly so as not to plunge the nation into unnecessary crisis.
A government source said: “The APC National Chairman came at a time the Acting President was about to have a meeting with a select group of government officials. He was asked to join the meeting, which bordered on the battle line drawn by the Senate.
“During the session, the APC National Chairman said he had interacted with Saraki and advised the Senate leadership and Senators to ‘lie low’ and avoid anything capable that was capable of plunging the nation into crisis.
“Oyegun also said the APC could not understand why the party in power would be in opposition against itself.
“No one can say if Oyegun’s intervention was responsible for the visit of the Senate President to Osinbajo.”

There were indications yesterday that the Presidency had uncovered four planks on which the Senate is hinging its threats of impeachment.
One of them is the running battle between the Presidency and the Senate over continued stay of the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission ( EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu, in office.
A reliable Presidency source said: “Intelligence report revealed that some senators have identified four issues to take the Presidency on.
“These issues are insistence on the removal of Magu; the renewal of the row between the chamber and the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Col. Hamid Ali (rtd); the alleged denigrating comments of the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption(PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay and alleged constitutional breaches by the Acting President and the Presidency in general.
“Although the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, told the party leadership that the impeachment kite caught him unawares and he swiftly overruled the senators behind it, intelligence report indicated that “it was a kite flying agenda” by some senators.
“The government does not wholly believe the defense of the Senate leadership. It is closely monitoring events and putting safety valves in place, including legal dimension.
“Part of the intelligence report showed that some senators had plotted the impeachment script before the Tuesday session.
“Those who tabled the motion were actually not aware that the Acting President had returned to the country.”
It was learnt at press time yesterday that some past leaders (names withheld) had teamed up with the Acting President against the threats from the Senate.
“These leaders have told the Acting President to remain focused and ignore elements trying to cause political upheaval in the country.
“In fact, they assured Osinbajo of their support. These are leaders who the government thought had identified with the Senate.”
The tone for the impeachment process was set by two issues raised on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday.
The Senate had on Tuesday taken exception to the retention of the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, and the Executive’s alleged non-compliance with the resolutions of the Senate.
The President of the Senate had said: “This is an issue that we have to once and for all address. We cannot pass laws and see that the laws are not being obeyed. This resolution must be obeyed by the Acting President, otherwise, we will take appropriate actions and resolutions.”
On the same day, Senators Eyinanya Abaribe and Kabiru Marafa had under Point of Order asked the Senate President to become Acting President in the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Acting President, who was away for AU meeting in Addis Ababa.
Marafa said: “If the President is not around, the Vice President should act, and if the Vice President is not around, the Senate President, who is the number 3 citizen should become Acting President.”

Daudu SAN? Why is the NBA commiserating with the father of her bereaved husband? Is her death a loss to Mr. Daudu who humiliated, despised and abandoned her? We are told not to speak ill of the dead. What of those who are alive?
The lady was a lawyer in her husband's law firm. She gave all her life to her office and her family. But she was sacked without any benefit. To the knowledge of NBA leaders, she was subjected to material want. It was so bad that she could not afford to travel abroad for medical treatment as was the case when she was being paid salary by her husband. Her colleagues in the Bar isolated her as they did not want to offend her husband. And when Mr. Daudu filed his divorce petition, the NBA could not set up a team of lawyers to defend her. Mrs. Daudu was greatly relieved when the renowned human rights advocate, Mr. Femi Falana SAN decided to defend her in court.
It is good that there are a few Nigerian lawyers who are ready to speak the truth at all times. Hence, not all lawyers are shedding crocodile tears over the painful death of a good woman, Mrs. Ranti Daudu. I commend a former chairman of the Governing Council of the National Human Rights Commission, Professor Chidi Odinkalu who has paid the greatest tribute to her. According to him:

"After more than 28 years of vicious domestic violence, my big sister, Ranti Daudu, died last
night in Kaduna. Awful!!!

Ranti had heart, soul & goodness. She endured torture no one should live with at the hands of a man. She's at rest.

Ranti was also the ablest advocate for the human rights of persons with disabilities in

Those of us who are close to the woman cannot but confirm that she was a victim of the worst form of domestic violence. Others must speak out so that young people can learn from the life of frustration of a decent lady. We sympathize with her 6 children who will certainly be consoled by Allah.

Dino Melaye: INEC Yet To Receive Court Order, To Proceed With Recall – Official

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it would continue with the process for the recall of the senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, despite a court ruling asking it to maintain status quo.
Rotimi Oyekanmi, the media aide to the Chairman of the Commission, Mahmood Yakubu, who disclosed this Friday, said it was yet to be served with the court papers putting the process on hold.
Mr. Melaye’s lawyer, Mike Ozekhome, had explained that maintaining the status-quo me status quo should halt the recall process.
An Abuja Division of the Federal High Court had on Thursday ordered parties involved in the planned recall of a senator to maintain status quo.
The order was made exparte; implying the order was given without hearing the order party, in this case, INEC.
According to the timetable released by INEC, the notice of verification would be posted at the commission’s constituency office in Lokoja, the Kogi Sate capital on July 10.
The commission also said it would verify the signatures of those calling for the recall on August 19 and publish the results the same day.
Mr. Oyekanmi said the Commission was yet to be served with the court papers as of Friday afternoon and therefore it would go ahead with the process.
“I asked our Director of Legal services this afternoon, and she told me she had not received any court paper. I wouldn’t know if she eventually got the papers between then and now (7.52pm). If we are not served with the papers it means we will continue with the process,” he told PREMIUM TIMES over the telephone Friday night.
Mr. Oyekanmi however pro, however, call the director to find out if the papers were eventually served on the commission and get back to this newspaper but never did.
Efforts to reach INEC Director of Voter Education and Publicity, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not pick calls to his mobile telephone. He did not also respond to a text message sent to him by this newspaper.
Mr. Osaze-Uzzi’s deputy, Nick Dazang, could also not be reached.
INEC had recently acknowledged receiving a petition from Mr. Melaye’s constituents asking to recall him. About 52 per cent of registered voters in the lawmaker’s constituency are believed to have signed the petition.
The commission had also written to the senator intimating him formally of its receipt of the petition and that it would kick-start the process on July 3.
Mr. Melaye has accused the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, of sponsoring the ‎recall process. Although both men are members of Nigeria’s ruling APC, they are political enemies.
