If we don't get a referendum on Biafra's independence, there will be no elections in the South East"- IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, says in new interview
In a new interview with Deutche Welle Africa, IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu,
says there would be no election in the South East unless the federal
government conducts a referendum on Biafra. Kanu during the week told
members of his group that there would be no election in the South East,
starting with Anambra state, unless the Federal government agrees to its
call for a referendum on Biafra. Speaking in the interview, Kanu said
"There will be no election in Biafra land. No more elections. They can put whoever they like in office, they can do whatever they like with their political positions but we will not engage in any political process".Making reference to the various attacks by herdsmen, Kanu said although the Biafran agitation is a peaceful one, they would require arms and ammunition for self defense.
"I am sure you have heard about the Fulani herdsmen killing people all over the place. So how do you intend to defend yourself against the Fulani people who have guns and bullets. They have been killing our people, raping our women, destroying crops in the farms. No one has done anything about it. Is that how human beings are supposed to live? Self defense is recognized even by the laws in the UN. We have the right. If someone were to barge into this interview and is wielding a machete or an AK 47, are you suggesting we should let them get away with it".Kanu described Nigeria as an uncivilized country. He said he was not treated fairly by the Nigerian judicial system.
"I was not treated fairly. Nigeria is not a civilized country. People behave like animals. They are not reasonable enough. They are not disciplined. They are not mentally developed enough to run a transparent civil society They have a fiddle mindset where you have the ruling class and a multitude of poverty stricken who never utter any word in rebellion or to even ask questions about their plight. That is one thing we are determined to challenge".When asked how he feels using such words to describe Nigerians, Kanu said
"I am being very kind to be honest. I could have used far more harsh words to describe them. I am being very kind. Perhaps there are a few good people among them but as a collective, it is a complete mess and you can see for yourself. You look through the road, you see how horrible they are. Don't you see how unkempt everywhere is? How filthy and dirty everywhere is? That is the product of a Nigerian system that is uniquely backwards even by the very third world standards of black Africa".According to Kanu, Biafra existed before the British came into Nigeria
"We were existing before the British came. Just allow us to go back to what we were before. No African came to Europe to create countries, so for somebody to just come here and say you, you and you are now Nigerians is simply laughable".
Man killed by gunmen not NYSC member
Samuel Collins, the 31-year-old man shot
dead by unknown gunmen on Saturday in Yenagoa, is not a corps member, an
official of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa, has
said.
Mr Mathew Ngobua, Head, Public Relations Unit, NYSC office Yenagoa,
made the clarification on Monday in Yenagoa in an interview with the
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that checks conducted at NYSC database revealed that the name of the victim was not in the record.
He described reports that the victim was a corps member as “misleading,’’ adding that the security of corps members was top priority of the management of the NYSC in Bayelsa.
NAN reports that Collins was until his death, a contract security guard.
He was shot by unknown gunmen and dispossessed of his mobile phone, money and other valuables in Kpansia suburb of Yenagoa.
The Police Public Relations Officer at the Bayelsa Command, Mr Asinim Butswat, had confirmed the incident to NAN on Sunday in Yenagoa.
Butswat also corrected the impression that the victim was a corps member.
He explained that family members of the deceased said that Collins was undergoing training on oil and gas skills project in Port Harcourt.
“On 24 June, 2017 at 2130 hours, policemen responded to a distress call of cult activities at Kpansia, Yenagoa.
“The policemen responded swiftly and on arrival met a young man in a pool of blood.
“The young man was later identified as one Samuel Collins third party security operative at the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB).
“Collins was undergoing training programme at Port Harcourt and came to Yenagoa for the holidays.
“The deceased was not an NYSC member as erroneously captured in some headlines,” Butswat said.
The police spokesman said the killing was cult related based on the utterances of the gunmen as narrated to the Police by eyewitnesses before the victim was shot.
He said that investigation was on-going to unravel those behind the dastardly act and apprehend them since the police had gathered useful information on the cult group.

Braking news CVR: Adamawa to declare public holiday
Dissatisfied with the voter turn-out,
Gov. Muhammadu Bindow of Adamawa says he would declare public holiday to
enable eligible citizens of the state participate in the ongoing
Continuous Voters Registration (CVR).
Bindow said this while receiving some Adamawa traditional rulers who paid him Sallah homage on Monday in Yola.
The governor said that the level of people’s participation in the exercise across the state was discouraging and appeal to all eligible citizens to come out and be registered.
“The decision is to give chance especially to people from Northern and other parts of the state who lost their voter registration cards either during Boko Haram crisis, flood and other disasters to re-register.
“The State Government is going to declare a two-day public holiday to
enable all eligible citizens of the state to participate in the ongoing
CVR.
“The State Executive Council in the next meeting will fix the appropriate date for the holiday,’’ Bindow said.
He therefore called on eligible people of the state to come out and register to enable them exercise their rights during elections.
Earlier in their separate remarks, the Lamido of Adamawa, Alhaji Muhammadu Barkindo, and the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Isa Ahmadu, commended the governor for infrastructural development in the state despite financial constrains.
The traditional rulers pledged their support and cooperation to the government for peace and development to reign supreme in the state.

Tennis news ; Serena Williams will be 700 on return -McEnroe
Former tennis bad boy John McEnroe says Serena Williams would be
‘like 700’ in the world tennis rankings if she played on the men’s tour.
McEnroe, who won seven Grand Slam titles in his career, was speaking to American Broadcaster National Public Radio about his memoir ‘You Cannot Be Serious’.
He said that Williams was the best female player ever, ‘no question.’
But when asked about her being the best ever, without gender
qualifiers, McEnroe said: ‘If she had to just play the circuit — the
men’s circuit — that would be an entirely different story…she’d be like
700 in the world.’
McEnroe elaborated that the thought Serena’s incredible mental strength would allow her to beat some male players.
He added: ‘That [700 ranking] doesn’t mean I don’t think Serena is an incredible player. I do, but the reality of what would happen would be I think something that perhaps it’d be a little higher, perhaps it’d be a little lower.
‘And on a given day Serena could beat some players. I believe she’s so incredibly strong mentally that she could overcome some situations where players would choke.
McEnroe won seven Grand Slam titles in his career. Williams has won 23. She is currently sixth months pregnant and engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
NPR journalist Lulu Garcia-Navarro, who interviewed McEnroe, took to Twitter to defend the former tennis ace.
She asked: ‘Is being the best athlete in the world about pitting men against women? By that metric women can never be the best.
‘Shouldn’t you look at exception performances and wins? It’s not a battle of the sexes.’
Williams had admitted in the past that she’d probably lose to a male champion in ten minutes or less.
When interviewed on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ four years ago, she said: ‘For me, men’s tennis and women’s tennis are completely, almost, two separate sports.
‘If I were to to play Andy Murray, I would lose 6-0, 6-0 in five to six minutes, maybe ten minutes. No, it’s true. It’s a completely different sport.
‘The men are a lot faster and they serve harder, they hit harder. It’s just a different game. I love to play women’s tennis. I only want to play girls, because I don’t want to be embarrassed.’

End of the world ;12-year-old boy murdering his 11-year-old 'girlfriend' in Kenya,
A 12 year old Standard Three pupil was this week charged before Naivasha
High Court judge Christine Meoli for killing his 11-year-old girlfriend
identified as Mary Nduta in Magumu village in Kinangop, Kenya.
The boy(pictured with his lawyer) from Kinangop allegedly stabbed the
girl to death on July 5, 2016,claiming that dark forces ordered him to
stab the girl three times as the two had sex.
The High Court found the boy guilty of murder. He denied the charge and
Justice Meoli directed that he be held at Engineer Police station in
Kinangop until the 28th of July when the case will come up for mentioning.
However, the court ruled that the accused was experiencing a difficult
childhood in a dysfunctional family and sent him to Kimumu junior
probation hostels for three years.
In his defence the boy, who was represented by lawyer Francis Mburu, said dark forces directed him to stab the girl.
The boy told the court that he was getting intimate with the girl when a
tall man armed with a machete and a shiny knife appeared and ordered
him to kill her. After stabbing the girl, the boy confessed to her
sister.
But in her ruling, the court dismissed the boy’s defence describing it
as incredible. The judge ruled that from evidence adduced in court, the
girl could have rebuffed the boy’s advances leading to the fatal attack.
Meoli noted that minutes before she died, the girl told her relatives the person who had stabbed her.
On the accused defence that a mysterious man dressed in a dark cap appeared to him before the incident, the judge termed it as fiction and an invention of the minor.

She added that during the trial, the boy was careful to cover any
loopholes describing him as having a fertile but corrupted imagination.
“The accused defence is unbelievable, conjured to absolve him and the prosecution has proven the case beyond any reasonable doubt,” she said.
The judge noted that it would be unfair to return the minor back to the
harsh background that he had been raised in, adding that he need
counseling and education.
There is no need to send the boy back to the dysfunctional background but to a place where he can be rehabilitated," she ruled.
Source: Standard KenyaFor the first time in two decades, the White House did not host a Ramadan dinner
Breaking with tradition, the White House under President Donald Trump did not host an iftar dinner, the meal Muslims eat to break their daily fast during Ramadan.
The dinner, which has been often attended by prominent members of the U.S. Muslim community, began in 1996 during former President Bill Clinton’s White House tenure and continued throughout George W. Bush Jr . and Barack Obama's administrations.
The statement read in full:
"On behalf of the American people, Melania and I send our warm greetings to Muslims as they celebrate Eidal-Fitr. Muslims in the United States joined those around the world during the holy month of Ramadan to focus on acts of faith and charity. Now, as they commemorate Eid with family and friends, they carry on the tradition of helping neighbors and breaking bread with people from all walks of life. During this holiday, we are reminded of the importance of mercy, compassion, and goodwill. With Muslims around the world, the United States renews our commitment to honor these values. Eid Mubarak"
