Ex-President Jonathan at Rhodes Forum, calls for reform of UN

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has called for the reform and democratisation of the United Nations in order to make it more representative and responsive to the security challenges.

Jonathan made the call Friday while presenting his remarks at the opening panel of the Dialogue of Civilisations Rhodes Forum’s 15th Anniversary Summit in Greece. Jonathan who was the lead discussants stressed that the UN Security Council should be expanded to ensure representations from all regions and power centres in the world, adding that the UN dialogue method must also change to guarantee a more peaceful world. Other members of the panel were former French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, former President of Mali Dioncounda Traore, professor of globalisation Ian Goldin and President of Infowatch Group, Natalya Kaspersky.

A statement issued by Dr. Jonathan's media adviser Mr. Ikechukwu Eze quoted the ex-President as saying: “For the world to experience sustainable peace, effective leadership must come from the UN, the flagship of global organisations. The UN that would inspire this kind of leadership should ensure equity, with leading nations and power centres representing different regions of the world, sitting at the Security Council as permanent members.

“The UN dialogue method must, therefore, change. The security Council of the United Nations must be democratised, in view of new global realities, in the interest of peace.”

He further noted that as presently constituted, “the UN is portrayed as a platform where nations come to quarrel and display their might, in stead of its statutory role, as a forum for unity and world peace.

“In terms of carrying out the mandate of preventing a Third World War, we could say the UN has done exceptionally well up to this moment. However, we cannot say the same thing over its mandate of ensuring world Peace as it is obvious that the UN has not achieved much in this regard. From 1945, when 51 nations came together and now that the UN has 193 member states, the world has not known real peace.

“The truth is that despite decades of efforts at the multinational level towards ensuring peace, the world has remained mired in developmental challenges that question man’s ability to govern, collaborate, unite and make his world better. Those are challenges of poverty, healthcare, inequality and conflicts. This is because the world has not matched this zeal for organisation with a corresponding gusto for trust, good faith and the conscience for productive engagements, negotiations and dialogue.

“So when I am asked to proffer solutions for achieving global peace and sustainable development, I will say that the answer lies in genuine dialogue. This entails negotiations, hard bargaining, inclusivity, persuasion and confidence building.”

Below is the ex-President Jonathan’s opening speech:

AN ADDRESS BY DR. GOODLUCK E. JONATHAN (PRESIDENT, FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA, 2010-2015) AT DOC RHODES FORUM ON ‘MULTIPOLARITY AND DIALOGUE IN REGIONAL AND GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTS: IMAGINING POSSIBLE FUTURES’, 06 OCTOBER, 2017

Protocol

Let me first commend Rhodes Forum for advancing the philosophy of Dialogue of Civilisations (DOC) in this past 15 years.  I also wish to thank the Forum for inviting me to share my ideas with this highly intellectual discussants at this year’s programme, taking place in Greece; a nation deservedly recognised as the cradle of Western civilisation, birthplace of the Olympic Games, as well as democracy.

2.  I consider the theme for this year’s Summit, ‘Multipolarity and Dialogue in Regional and Global Developments: Imagining Possible Futures’ quite pertinent, in view of the prevailing dynamics in global politics. It is a topic suitable for interrogation by academicians, civil society, technocrats and politicians, in order to provide a clear direction for the world, as it seeks the path to sustainable peace and development.

3.  I will leave the theoretical concepts of historical global power formations for my co-discussants who are in the academia, so that I can quickly share with you what I consider as practical issues that are critical to advancing peace in the world.

I will also share with you what I did with my fellow African leaders to bring peace (in Africa) at the continental, sub-continental and national levels.

4.  Even then, I have to state that at different times, the world has witnessed various power configurations which started in the modern world as a multipolar arrangement that became bipolar after WWII. It eventually morphed into a Unipolar sphere of influence after the collapse of the Soviet Union about two decades ago, before other power centres emerged in the  21st Century to define what we have now as the return of the Multipolar formation.

5.  That the world needs peace is a declaration no one ever contests, given what the absence of peace portends. That the only road to a peaceful world is through dialogue is also incontrovertible. What then raises a valid contention is the argument over the steps taken by leaders towards realising peace. Are they the right or wrong steps?

6.  At the end of World War II, 51 nations came together to form the United Nations on 24 October, 1945. The UN Security Council was also formed the same day. The UN was set up principally as a replacement for the ineffective League of Nations, in order to prevent another world war and guarantee world peace.

7.   In terms of carrying out the mandate of preventing a Third World War, we could say the UN has done exceptionally well up to this moment. However, we cannot say the same thing over its mandate of ensuring world Peace as it is obvious that the UN has not achieved much in this regard. From 1945, when 51 nations came together and now that the UN has 193 member states, the world has not known real peace.

8. Late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, a Nigerian philosopher and musician of international repute, tried to rebrand the UN in his own way, by calling it ‘Disunited Nations.’ He might have exaggerated. Nonetheless, his grouse was that nations, going through bitter conflicts were all members of the UN. Yet, the global body, primarily set up to guarantee world peace, appears not to have been able to muster the required will power, to resolve those issues that cause conflicts, for decades.

8.  Over time, since the establishment of the UN, the world has seen conflicts within and among nations of catastrophic and tragic dimensions, without the global body living up to its billing to provide far-reaching solutions. For instance, the East Asia and the Korean Peninsula have not known real peace for 60 years because South and North Korea have remained technically at war since the Korean War (1950-1953), after the warring sides failed to sign any armistice.

10.  We have similar situations between India and Pakistan, and in the unending Middle East crisis, which is at the heart of endless bloodletting in the zone. There was also the Rwandan genocide as well as the specific cases of Bosnia, Somalia and Darfur in Sudan, which unravelled with so much bloodshed.

In each case, the UN was helpless in resolving the conflicts. The ongoing wars in Syria, Iraq, distressing Rohingya dilemma in Myanmar, as well as threat of conflicts and wars in other parts of the world, are all signs that the UN is failing the world.

11.  Below the influence of the Super Powers are other power centres and regional blocs like the European Union, the Arab League, Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), Organisation of American States (OAS), African Union (AU), the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference (SADCC) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). There is no doubt that all these groups have been pivotal to peace and economic development in the countries within their authority. However, they have apparently been helpless, in view of disputes between nations within their fold and those outside their influence. This is where the role of a reorganised UN, the one that inspires trust among these blocs and all nations, is most required.

12.  The truth is that despite decades of efforts at the multinational level towards ensuring peace, the world has remained mired in developmental challenges that question man’s ability to govern, collaborate, unite and make his world better. Those are challenges of poverty, healthcare, inequality and conflicts. This is because the world has not matched this zeal for organisation with a corresponding gusto for trust, good faith and the conscience for productive engagements, negotiations and dialogue.

13.  I believe in the UN as an effective global body that should lead the quest for the peace we desire. I am also convinced that for the organisation to bring about world peace, the UN method and approach to dialogue must be reviewed. It is important that all member nations of the UN must have faith in the organisation, and believe that it is fair and representative enough to protect them. The Security Council which is the most powerful UN organ, with "primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security”, cannot inspire that confidence, because of the way it is presently configured.

14.   The present situation where one nation, out of 193 nations, can upturn the decision of the Security Council, has not been helpful in galvanising the confidence and mutuality, necessary to bring peace to the world. If anything, the system, which has remained unreviewed in over half a century, has been more effective in opening new frontiers for conflicts, rather than providing answers to the ones it sought to resolve.

15.  The UN dialogue method must, therefore, change.

16.  The Security Council of the United Nations must be democratised, in view of new global realities, in the interest of peace. As presently constituted, the UN is portrayed as a platform where nations come to quarrel and display their might, in stead of its statutory role, as a forum for unity and world peace.

I appreciate organisations such as the Rhodes Forum for stepping in to fill the gap, with programmes that promote understanding, unity and equality.

17.  However, for the world to experience sustainable peace, effective leadership must come from the UN, the flagship of global organisations. The UN that would inspire this kind of leadership should ensure equity, with leading nations and power centres representing different regions of the world, sitting at the Security Council as permanent members.

18.  In Africa, the restructuring of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) to African Union (AU), coupled with the formation of the regional blocks such as the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), ECOWAS and SADCC has helped reduce conflicts significantly. This has given the continent a glimmer of hope in the way it applies dialogue as an instrument of regional peace and development.

19.  In West Africa where I come from, ECOWAS and my nation Nigeria has resolved, as well as prevented, many conflicts and stabilised and strengthened democracy in many countries in the sub-region. Some of the countries we were able to stabilise are Liberia, Sierra Leone, Niger, Cote D’Ivoire, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Burkina Faso and The Gambia. We were able to achieve this because of intense and purposeful dialogue.

20.   In ECOWAS, we have not only adopted dialogue as a productive means of resolving political conflicts and violence, but have also moved many steps towards economic integration. I believe that successes have been recorded in this regard with the policy on free movement of persons and goods, similar to what obtains within the EU countries. We were able to achieve all these through a process of sincere dialogue.

21.  When I was in office as President, I championed the cause for good governance, transparent elections and peaceful power transfers, because I also believed that at the heart of the dialogue for a more peaceful world, is the need to cultivate a culture of democracy and good governance at the national levels. This is a good way to reduce local tensions that could blossom into global crisis.

22.  Dialogue is a formula that serves any community well, in preventing or resolving conflicts. In Nigeria, through a process of dialogue, we arrived at an amnesty programme that brought an end to the crisis in the Niger Delta, an oil-rich region in my country that accounts for all the oil wells that remains the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy.

23.  Sometime in 2014, I had a thought in my mind. Nigeria is easily the most ethnically and religiously heterogeneous society in Africa, and one of the most diverse nations in the world.

Many times, these different ethnic groups are pulling in diverse directions that as a leader, you may experience genuine fears that the center may not hold.

24.  At that time, I asked myself, how can I as President, help build a more harmonious union in Nigeria. One based on the words of our National Anthem which ends with 'to build a nation where peace and justice shall reign'.

25.  To address this I convened a National Conference where the various ethnic groups and other stakeholders deliberated for five months on the future of the country. They had the mandate to discuss and advice the Government on all matters pertaining to our nationhood, except the sovereignty of the country.

26.  On Thursday August 21, 2014, I received the report. Our general elections came up six months after the national conference. The confidence and national goodwill the conference inspired, helped bring down the tension during and after the general elections. It was a confidence boosting outcome, despite the predictions by some international bodies that Nigeria was going to disintegrate in 2015.

27.  There is one important point people often overlook whenever the issue of global peace arises. There can be no peace at the global level if there is no peace in the heart, conscience and character of leaders of nations.

28.  I spoke recently at another event about my belief that the best leadership flows from inspiration and not from power or force of arms. Conscience based leadership build nations and ensure peace while ego based leadership throws nations into conflicts and chaos.

29.  In closing, I have to make one thing clear: irrespective of centres of control, it is only genuine dialogue that can bring peace to the world. A peaceful world will reduce financial crises, armed conflicts, terrorism, unchecked migration, religious conflicts and secessionist agitations.

30.  It is obvious that investments thrive, and economies grow better in peaceful environments, leading to improvement in education and other social investments and reduction in poverty.

31.  The advocacy by the Rhodes Forum and similar organisations is exceedingly important because they provide neutral platforms for advise on global issues. However, for the world to experience a lasting peace, there must be fairness, equity, and justice in the UN Security Council.

32.   I say this because I envision smaller or hitherto less powerful nations acquiring new capacities and capabilities, in this age of technology’s boundless potentials, with which they may even challenge the Super Powers for relevance. Only a democratised United Nations where every nation, or power bloc truly commits to processes for sustainable peace, could eliminate the possibility of such apocalypse.

33.  So when I am asked to proffer solutions for achieving global peace and sustainable development, I will say that the answer lies in genuine dialogue. This entails negotiations, hard bargaining, inclusivity, persuasion and confidence building

Beautiful Japanese reporter dies after 159 hours of overtime
The President of Japanese Broadcaster NHK offered a public apology on Friday to the family of a 31-year-old reporter who died in 2013 after logging 159 hours of overtime with only two days off in a month.
NHK reporter Miwa Sado, 31, who had been covering political news in Tokyo, was found dead in her bed in July 2013, reportedly clutching her mobile phone.
According to reports, a government inquest a year after her death ruled that it was linked to excessive overtime. She had taken two days off in the month before she died.
In a statement by the NHK’s president, Ryoichi Ueda, he apologized to Sado’s family and also pledged to improve work conditions at the broadcast station.
“We are sorry that we lost an excellent reporter and take seriously the fact that her death was recognized as work-related,” President Ryoichi Ueda said, adding that “We will continue to work for reform in cooperation with her parents,” he told reporters.
Labour minister Katsunobu Kato on also urged the public broadcaster to reduce long working hours. “We urge NHK to manage work hours and cut long working hours… so that such incidents will never happen,” Kato told reporters.
The dedicated and vibrant Sato covered Tokyo assembly elections for the broadcaster in June 2013 and an upper-house vote for the national parliament the following month before her painful death.
In another similar event a young woman who logged more than 100 hours of overtime in one month at major advertising agency Dentsu, committed suicide in 2015.
At a Tokyo court hearing on Friday, Dentsu advertising agency was ordered to pay 500,000 yen ($4,430) as a penalty for allowing its employees, including the young woman, to illegally work excessive overtime hours.

Presidential Corruption: Buhari Is More Of The Same By Erasmus Ikhide

The cloud around President Muhammadu Buhari's incorruptibility is gradually disappearing with the emergent of Dr. Ibe Kachikwu's leaked letter to him on the rot in the nation's cash cow called Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC. Buhari's thinning claim to integrity and invisibility as a-no-nonsense anti-corruption Czar now lies on how he wades the big stick or buckles under the weight of $25 billion contract-scam-sleaze.

Dr. Kachikwu's letter, aside from under the table dealings and pervasive corruption, has rested any doubts as to whether or not President Buhari qualifies to continue to hold the office of the President beyond 2019. If a minister of such a critical sector of the economy that accounts for more than 80 percent of national earnings can't access the president to brief him about national and international oil transactions on a daily or weekly basis, then Nigeria has gone to the dogs. It's revolting that those who didn't contest or canvass for Nigerian votes in 2015 presidential election and were never voted for, are the ones ruling the country by default.

Pathetic Kachickwu groaned: "I would have wanted to come personally after receiving you at the airport to facilitate with you and discuss matters herein contained, however, I have been unable to secure an appointment to see you despite very many attempts."
There is no the question that President Buhari's delicate health is pretty rubbing him off his tenacity of purpose and his supposed prudent presidency. It could even be counterfactual to suppose that a Buhari in a choreographed corrupt democracy as such Nigerian's, a president caged by cabals, such Babarchir, and Abba Kyari will make any difference or desired change possible.

Aside from that, the petroleum minister's lamentation of insubordination on the part of Dr. Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of NNPC and the associated fraud-for-contract-scam shows that what has happened between former President Goodluck Jonathan's administration and President Muhammadu Buhari's government is a mere change of corruption baton in the race to pauperized Nigerians.

The damning revelation that the following major contracts were never reviewed by or discussed with the Board of NNPC like the Crude Term contracts- valued at over $10bn, the DSDP contracts- value over $5bn, the AKK pipeline contract- value approximately $3bn, various financing allocation funding contracts with the NOCs – value over $3bn, various NPDC production service contracts- valued at over $3bn–$4bn, has drilled a damnable hole in the anti-corruption crusade of President Buhari's government.

Before Kachikwu's belated disclosure, there have been allegations of hundreds of several million of crude oil being loaded off Nigeria territorial waters every day that goes to the accounts of those fronting for President Buhari's cabals in the oil sector. "Apart from NLNG gas which is being shipped away illegally at the snap of the fingers, the oil fields from 1 Okono field, US AN field, Mobile field, EA field, Boga field, Tujar, Bavani PSO and Qua Iboe PSO, these Aso Rock hawks are abound everywhere, representing one cabal after another", says the source. He countered that the claims that only federal government does crude oil lifting since the exit of former President Goodluck Jonathan is false.

This is not the first time President Buhari's make-believe anti-corruption posture will go through credibility test. In the early life of this administration, President Muhammad Buhari received concrete evidence that his Chief of Staff (CoS), Abba Kyari, took N500m from operators of MTN to help the telecommunications giant mitigate the fine imposed on it by the federal government. Sadly, while the MTN directors who were in the game of shortchanging Nigerians were sacked when the story broke out, Mr. Abba Kyari still carries on as President Buhari's Chief (Cabal) of Staff. The man was not even invited for interrogation, let alone being arrested and prosecuted.

It has been revealed that the evidence of Kyari corrupt practices was presented to President Buhari several times including during the Sallah holiday. The mind-boggling revelation is one of the mounting allegations of corruption involving members of the top echelon of President Buhari’s administration. Confronted with the evidence, the CoS reportedly claimed he was helping the All Progressives Congress party to raise funds for the gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, to which the president is said to have asked him if he was the party chairman, but did not relieve him of his post. Abba Kyari allegedly collected money from Jide Omokore, a shady businessman who was massively involved in corruption in the oil sector in President Jonathan's administration. Following acceptance of the money, Mr. Kyari reportedly took Mr. Omokore twice to meet President Buhari to enable the businessman to make a promise to refund some of the funds before he was arrested by the EFCC.

Over time, President Buhari has been known to be providing cover for the corrupt inner circle of his government who have been exposed as engaging in brazen cases of corruption. On many occasions, they reportedly got members of President Buhari’s office to absolve them of any “wrongdoing”. The Chief of Army Staff, Yusuf Buratai, was found to have used Nigerian Army funds to purchase homes in Dubai.

Also, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Abdulrahman Dambazau, bought homes for millions of dollars in Boston in the United States; Several other aides and officials within the government have been exposed for involvement in illegal employments and forgery of age and certificates. As in the case of Mr. Kyari, they have so far been shielded by President Buhari. Speaking earlier to journalists in Daura, his hometown, the president said his “anti-corruption war” was being implemented on the basis of justice and fairness.

The hypocrisy surrounding President Buhari's anti-corruption gambit becomes obvious when the former Secretary to the Federal Government, SGF, Babachir Lawal was exposed for awarding grass cutting contract to a company for which he's a director. Babachir was indicted for awarding a contract to his own company to clear "invasive plant species" in a small IDP camp for N200 million, more than a quarter of the money allocated to feed displaced persons!

President Buhari's response was less charitable in his letter to the Senate, absorbing the SGF of any wrongdoing. In his reaction conveyed through the letter read by Mr. Saraki, President Buhari said the SGF was not given a fair hearing before the indictment. Mr. Buhari said neither the SGF nor the company said to have been used to perpetrate the alleged illegality was invited by the Shehu Sani-committee.

He also said the report of the committee was signed by three of the nine members of the ad hoc committee, thus making its report a minority report. Consequently, the president said he had no choice than to act against Mr. Lawal as canvassed by the Senate.

Nigerians are yet to know the depth of corruption in the Buhari-led administration as a result of his troubled ill-health. Neither are we aware of the level of rot in the NNPC. If President Buhari's secret meeting with Dr. Ibe Kachikwu today in Aso Rock is anything to go by, Nigerian and Nigerians are further reduced to a slave plantation or social mutants, who hear, see but their voices remain stolen.

Whatever it's worth, Nigeria's electorate is fervently waiting for denunciation, suspension, investigation and outright punishment for a roguish GMD of NNPC who sees himself as a demigod, representing an ailing president from his own region of the country. That's the only way President Muhammadu Buhari can wash his hands off the sleaze.

Tiwa Savages Comment On Gender Equality Stirs Debate On Twitter

Award-winning singer, Tiwa Savage, had Nigerians on Twitter in a stir over her comments on gender equality.
In a recent interview with The Beat 99.9 FM, the singer and mother made a stunning revelation about her view on gender equality and roles.
“It’s real. I’m not going to say I’m completely comfortable with it but it is what it is. You have to deal with it. If it means you have to work 10 times harder than your male counterparts, don’t complain about it, do what you have to do.
We all celebrate people like Oprah and Mo Abudu and we don’t actually realize what they have to do to get to that point. They probably had to do 20 times (more) than their male counterparts. Once you get there, you don’t complain about how you get there. So, whatever it is you have to do as a female, you just have to get it done.
I know I’ll (ruffle) a few feathers but I also don’t think men and women are equal. I don’t think that’s how God created us… especially in the household anyway. So I think as females… yeah we can be strong in our career, but when we are home we have to realize that the man is the head of the house.”
The revelation came days after she reacted to making BBC Top 100 Women List.
“Don’t let being a woman hinder you, I have and still have to fight to get people to respect and appreciate my work and not limit me because I am female so this really encourages me to keep pushing and breaking boundaries,” she said.
In her reaction, Tiwa told women not to allow their role as women in society to limit them from reaching their full potential.
Nigerians were on different sides of the spectrum on the topic of gender equality and roles.

Monkeypox” Virus: Bayelsa Residents Avoid Handshakes

Following the outbreak of monkeypox viral diseases in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital which has so far infected 11 people including a medical doctor, residents are avoiding handshakes and bodily contact in public places

Following the outbreak of monkeypox viral diseases in Yenagoa, Bayelsa capital which has so far infected 11 people including a medical doctor,  residents are avoiding handshakes and bodily contact in public places.
The development followed the advice by the Health Commissioner of Health, Professor Ebitimitula Etebu to members of the public to wash hands frequently and maintain higher levels of personal hygiene to curtail the spread of the disease.
Mr. Etebu had allayed fears of a possible epidemic following the outbreak of the contagious viral disease, assuring that the state government was on top of the situation.
People who attended public functions on Thursday and Friday in Yenagoa kept their distances as well as avoided handshakes and hugs that characterized exchange of pleasantries at social functions.
Some people who spoke on the sidelines of Thursday's World Teachers Day celebration in Yenagoa said the precautionary measure was justified due to the anxiety created by the spread of news of the dreaded disease on social media.
"This issue of avoiding handshakes reminds one of the days of the Ebola which compelled everyone to heighten personal hygiene and the government even provided wash hand basins and hand sanitizers at public places, but where are those things today?"
"That is how we are as a people, the Ebola outbreak did not teach us anything. So we are just avoiding each other like plague but what can we do?"
"It is based on advice that we should wash hands frequently and if my hand is clean, I would endanger myself by shaking hands with someone unwashed hands," Timi James said.
Residents across the state capital have been circulating text messages on social media networks urging people to abstain from shaking hands due to the outbreak of the disease.
Etebu disclosed that 11 persons, including a medical doctor, had been quarantined at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri in Yenagoa Local Government Area.
“As the name implies, the virus was first seen in monkeys but can also be found in all bush animals such as rats, squirrels, and antelopes, and that is why our surveillance on edible animals has to be heightened," he explained.
“The source is usually animals. It was first seen in monkeys and that is why it is called monkeypox."
“Secretions from particularly dead animals are highly contagious, so also the fluids from infected persons.”
The commissioner recalled that the first index case came from Agbura in Yenagoa, where somebody was purported to have killed and ate monkey meat and started developing rashes.

CACOL Demands Removal Of Wole Olanipekun, JB Dauda From Corruption Case Monitoring Committee

A civil society organization, Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), has called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman, National Judicial Council (NJC), Justice Walter Onnoghen, to review the membership of the Corruption and Financial Cases Monitoring Committee recently constituted by the NJC.
This, the organization said, is to ensure that people with blighted reputations are not allowed to sit on the committee.
The organization, previously known as Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders, made the call in a letter addressed to the CJN by Mr. Debo Adeniran, its Executive Chairman.
Dated 6 October, the letter listed Messrs. Wole Olanipekun and JB Dauda, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria, as being unworthy to sit on the committee.
While commending the choices of Justice Ayo Salami, retired President of the Federal Court of Appeal, and Mr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), CACOL maintained that Messrs. Olanipekun and Dauda have no business being on the committee because they have used their legal skills to defend corruption suspects.
“The lawyers we are talking about have been persistent in defending suspected corruption criminals and helping looters with the benefit of their knowledge of the law to wriggle through the lacunae to escape justice. Their regular justification has always been ‘we are only doing our work’. It is against the foregoing that we are urging you not to take the risk of allowing people who are corrupt or have allegations of corruption that can distort your good intentions on the committee,” stated CACOL.
The group also demanded a thorough screening of all the members of the committee to establish and make public what qualifies them for membership of the committee.
“The judiciary remains the last hope of the common people. In a situation where the judiciary can longer serve the purpose of its creation, it becomes anachronistic, useless, and self-help becomes the only hope, which is a recipe for anarchy. We believe that the present government’s efforts on anti-corruption have its gains that are commendable and with judiciary rising to the occasion, we can end the repeated starts we have been making at excising corruption from our country,” reasoned CACOL.

Toke Makinwa and Maje Ayida Finalize Divorce

The tempestuous marriage of media personality, Toke Makinwa, to her ex-husband, Maje Ayida, has finally been dissolved by an Igbosere High Court in Lagos on Thursday.
Toke had filed for divorce in March 2016 on grounds that her husband committed adultery.
Mr. Ayida, according to judge, Morenike Obadina, filed an answer to the petition but did not give oral evidence to support it. She said the position of the law was settled as pleadings did not amount to evidence.
“Pleadings on which no evidence was led are deemed abandoned. Therefore, Ayida’s evidence is deemed abandoned. The effect is that the petitioner’s evidence is unchallenged and uncontroverted,’’ she ruled.
The judge said the issue of cruelty which the petitioner (Makinwa) relied on was established because of the “mental and emotional stress” she was subjected to by her husband.
She said Toke had sufficiently proven that the husband committed adultery and continued to flaunt his adulterous relationships even to her face.
“I hold that the marriage has broken down on grounds of intolerable behavior. I hereby pronounce a 'Decree Nisi’ dissolving the marriage between Makinwa and Ayida which was administered at the Federal Marriage Registry, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Jan. 15, 2014."
”The 'Order Nisi' shall become absolute three months from today unless within that period sufficient cause is shown why it should not be made absolute,” the judge said.

Toke also told the court her husband cheated with his mistress, Anita Solomon, an affair which produced a child. She added that since they got married her husband had “behaved in a way she could not reasonably be expected to continue to bear.”
She also said the husband was cruel towards her. In her testimony, Toke said they got married in 2014, but ceased living together from November 8, 2015.
She also told the court of an instance where her husband threatened separation and even drafted a separation agreement because she discovered that he bought a ticket for his mistress to travel to London.
The mistress (Solomon), who is the second respondent, refused to join issues with the petitioner.

Toke had spilled details of her failed marriage in her memoir titled, ‘On Becoming.’
The book also detailed what transpired in the love triangle among herself, her estranged husband, and Ms. Solomon, who was alleged to be responsible for the crash of the union.

Nnamdi Kanu’s Former Lawyer Says IPOB Played Into Nigeria Gov't Hands, Lauds S/East Governors' Proscription Of Group’s Activities

Mr. Vincent Egechukwu Obetta, Senior Special Assistant (Inter-governmental Affairs, Compliance and Electoral Process) to the governor of Enugu State, has stated that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) played into the hands of the Federal Government by its hate-filled agitation. Mr. Obetta, a former counsel to Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader, stated this in an interview. He noted that between September 12 and 17, violent clashes between IPOB members and Nigerian Army troops on Operation Python Dance II resulted in the death of some people, subsequent proscription of IPOB activities by South-East governors and the designation of IPOB as a terrorist organization.
While commiserating with the families of the dead and wishing the injured speedy recovery, Mr. Obetta said the atmosphere in the South-East zone is too dense with hatred. He also stated that the casualty figures being bandied are purely speculative.
“There is no casualty desk record. The casualty figures we have lies within the realm of speculations as to the exact figure of dead and missing persons. On the proscription of IPOB by South-East governors, I will advise that the voice of reason should prevail in this case. It is senseless to be legalistic about it against the backdrop of the impending carnage that was staring the South-East governors in the face at the time,” he said.
He argued that the primary issue should be whether the decision was right at the time, saying the security and welfare of the people should be the primary purpose of government. “That is the basic constitutional duty of the South-East governors is as contained in Chapter II of 1999 constitution.
To that extent, I salute the governors’ proactive measure that stemmed the tide of an impending massacre in Igboland. On the propriety of the Federal Governments’ designation of IPOB as a terrorist organization, I can authoritatively say that the IPOB played into the hands of the Federal Government. I can recall that when I was counsel to Nnamdi Kanu (IPOB leader), the Federal Government played that card. While we were still at the Magistrate Court, Wuse, contending with the issue of Kanu’s bail, the prosecution surreptitiously went to the Federal High Court and obtained an order to further detain Kanu for another 90 days on the ground that they were investigating his involvement in an act of terrorism,” he said.
That court order, he recalled, was set aside and his unconditional release was ordered. Mr. Obetta said he has since reached a conclusion that the Federal Government waited to gather evidence relating to terrorism to fully implicate the IPOB and that the definition of terrorism is open-ended.
“The implication is that many ordinary criminal actions may also be found to constitute terrorist actions under the Act. So, the designation of IPOB as a terrorist organization may be immoral, unconscionable and overreaching, but that is the law today. The Terrorism (Prevention) and (Proscription Order) Notice, 2017 stands as the extant Presidential proclamation. As a result, I advise members of this group to respect Mr. President’s proclamation order until it is set aside on appeal,” Mr. Obetta counselled.
Mr. Obetta also described, as of no relevance, the disagreement of the US government with the Federal Government’s classification of IPOB as a terrorist group.
“When George Bush Jr. (former US President), in concert with the US Congress, enacted the US Patriot Act in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, the endorsement of the Nigerian government was not sought. For purpose of clarity, what the US Ambassador said in this respect was that the activities of IPOB does not constitute terrorism under the US law. He may be right, considering the fact that there is no universally accepted definition of the term terrorism. As I speak, there are over 250 definitions of terrorism today and that explains the mantra that ‘one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter’. More importantly and for your information, Nigeria is a sovereign nation recognized under international law,” he argued.
The Enugu governor’s aide also spoke on the efforts of Mr. Orji Uzor Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, to intervene in the dispute between IPOB and the Federal Government. According to him, he had expressed the view that the agitation was spinning out of control and felt there was a need to get influential Igbo leaders to intervene. To this end, Obetta said he arranged for Mr. Kalu to visit the IPOB leader in Kuje prison. Prior to the visit, he added, he had contacted some prominent Igbo leaders to visit him, but they declined.
“When I contacted Mr. Kalu, he accepted, not just to pay him a visit but to also intervene in calling for a dialogue. We had a meeting with some top relevant security agencies, who granted the permission for Mr. Orji Kalu to see Mr. Kanu. But to my greatest shock, I read in an online blog, a week later, that President Mohammadu Buhari sent Mr. Kalu to beg Kanu to stop his agitation for a price. It was so shocking and heartrending. As far as I know, Mr. Kalu’s intervention was to halt the hardship the agitation may foist on his kinsmen living in the North,” said the governor’s aide.
wondered why pro-Biafra elements, on account of Mr. Kalu’s decision to intervene, decided to insult the former governor simply because he holds a contrary opinion. Mr. Obetta contended it is contradictory to assert one’s right to self-determination, yet deny others their right to hold contrary views on the same subject.
“Revolutionaries like Nelson Mandela of South Africa, Che Guevara of Cuba, Mao Tse Tung of China and the current agitators for the self-determination in Spain restricted their campaigns and advocacy on government issues and policies as well as accommodated contrary view. The struggle for self-determination by IPOB, like the Palestinian struggle, is an impersonal race,” he stated.
He noted that he and other figures like former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, all South-East governors, President of Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, – Chief Nnia Nwodo; Mr. Debe Ojukwu, son of Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu; Chief Joe Igbokwe, Chief Chekwas Okorie and Chief Dozie Ikedife have been insulted and described as bastards and Hausa slaves.
Mr. Obetta advised that the current adversarial narrative must change.  While urging South-East governors to accelerate the process of economic self-determination of the region through the opening of the South- East economic buffer zone to create job opportunities, Mr. Obetta advised the Federal Government to immediately open talks with relevant stakeholders towards restructuring the country equity, unity and progress.
On the forthcoming council polls in the state, Obetta said the Enugu State government, under Mr. Ifeanyi Uguwanyi, has provided all the stimuli required for a free and fair electoral process on 4 November.
The governor has constituted a committee headed by Chief Edward Ubosi, Speaker of the House of Assembly, who investigated and weeded ghost workers in local councils. The government also amended the anachronistic provisions of the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) and local government laws, reconstituted the Board of ENSIEC and sought for the approval of funding for the conduct of the polls,” he said.

PDP and APC have expired as a party. Accord is the only hope for political development in Nigeria" - Doyin Okupe

"PDP and APC have expired as a party. Accord is the only hope for political development in Nigeria" - Doyin Okupe
Dr. Doyin Okupe, former Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, said that Accord Party is the only hope for political development Nigeria as APC and PDP have expired.
Recall that Okupe dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Accord Party last July. According to him, he wants to belong to a political party that will "be able to publicly state it's position on troubling national issues"
Addressing the party’s delegates at the 2017 South West stakeholders’ summit held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, Okupe said the APC and PDP have failed to deliver democratic dividends to the citizens, and as such leaving Accord Party as the best alternative for the people.
"The Peoples Democratic Party and the All Progressives Congress are big trucks which old age and misuse has affected their relevance," he said.
"Today, the PDP and APC have expired as a party. PDP as an automobile has spoilt its back aisle while APC crank shaft has broken
“Accord is the only hope for political development in Nigeria. This party is for Nigerian youths to achieve their lofty dreams and ambition of managing their own affairs in this country. I am old and not interested in any office again. Nigerian youths can be whatever they want to be in Accord
"You don’t need the so much touted experience, myself and some elders here will teach you on the job to master it. Youths cannot be allowed to flourish in either PDP or APC but we’ll provide the necessary platform to excel and teach you all in Accord
"We’ll teach you how it is done in an ethical manner; not how to kill, steal or corrupt the system. Accord is the best platform to realise your dream. This party is preparing the solid platform for the youths evenly
