Nigerian Couple Narrate How They Lost Two Of Their Children Within A Week Due To Poverty

A Lagos based couple, Hannah and Charles Nwankwo, have narrated how they lost two of their sons due to extreme poverty. The couple who reside in the Okota area of the state, say their sons died because they could not afford to give them the best of medical care when they fell ill. Speaking to The Nation, Mrs Nwankwo said
"When I gave birth to my first child Chukwuebuka Christopher, he had a condition which caused him to convulse regularly. We were managing it traditionally with palm kernel oil and some other things; but one day in March 2017, Chukwuebuka again began to convulse. On this occasion, we had unfortunately run out of the medicines, due to lack of money. To make matters worse, my husband was also not around to do the running around for cash. I was also eight months pregnant and Chukwuebuka was going to be three. I became afraid, panicky and started looking for people to help me. With neighbour’s help, we rushed him to Isolo General Hospital, where he was given injection and he immediately went into coma, which he never came out of. We really never took him to a hospital anytime he convulsed because the first time it happened and we took him to a hospital, we were told his condition wasn’t medical and that we should lean more towards traditional treatment. Since then, we managed to put it in check until this fateful day. It was after he went into a coma that we were told we should never have brought him to the hospital, as someone who is convulsing should not be injected. While in coma, they carried out series of tests on him and concluded that his life was in the hands of God and we should just be hopeful. But eventually, we lost him.
In the meantime, my second son also took ill. I still can’t understand what happened to Ebubechukwu; I can’t really explain it. He was one year, going to two and not sick. You know as children, he and his brother were always together; they played together, did everything together and were indeed very close. So, when he saw his brother lying in the hospital bed lifeless, he pulled and called his name in desperation. When he didn’t respond, he started crying and we consoled him. Thereafter he just started behaving funny and strange and eventually died.”
Mrs Nwankwo ays life has been difficult for them as her husband of three years who works with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, has been finding it difficult to fend for his family because his N12,000 a month salary is never regular. She says her husband is currently being owed four months salary.
“We have been managing by God’s Grace. My baby is not eating well. We go hungry for days; sometimes because we don’t have money to buy food and the baby doesn’t get enough breast milk. She is five months old and the last time we checked, she weighed just 4kg, which is the usual weight for new born babies.”
Mrs Nwankwo who is a teacher by training, says she would love to teach again as it is her passion. According to her, she has taught in two good schools but lost the jobs.
Asked how they meet their rent obligation, she said: “We don’t pay for this place because of the water (flood) and because the building is abandoned. The caretaker just allowed us to move in to manage. The place gets badly flooded when it rains and our things get soaked. The water even gets to our ankle inside the house.”
Narrating his ordeal, her husband, Charles said life has been a living hell for him
“I work with Lagos State Waste Management Agency, LAWMA and I am being paid N12, 000, but for four months now, I have not got a kobo as salary. Because of this, life has been hell for me and my family. What I do now is take up menial jobs during my free time, since my work hour with LAWMA is between 7am and 1pm. It was partly because of this lack of payment that I lost my children to the cold hands of death. When we had Chukwuebuka, they said he had cerebral palsy and we were referred to the Physiotherapy Department of Isolo General Hospital. We kept to the appointments until he stopped responding and we had to stop taking him there.  Initially he could not stand on his own, but when we stopped he started improving. Unfortunately, there was a day I was not at home and my phone was switched off due to low battery (we have never had power in this house since we moved in because we cannot afford it); my son had crisis and I could not be reached. My wife always knows where to find me, so she rushed over to tell me that my son was convulsing and had been admitted in the hospital. When I got there, I saw my son unconscious; he had been given injection. From that day, Chukwuebuka never opened his eyes. He spent a month on oxygen before he finally gave up. The strange thing about their deaths is that my second son who was not sick at all died before the first. My wife put to bed on the 7th of February 2017, so I stayed with the boys while she was upstairs in the maternal ward with the baby. While I was still wondering what befell my second son, the doctor told me I should never have been bringing him to the hospital, where sick children were on admission, but I had nobody to entrust him with. He said that was what affected him. My second son died on February 18th 2017, while my first child breathed his last on February 25th 2017. Before their death, whenever we went to the hospital and they needed anything, my wife would stay with them while I went to get whatever they needed, and then I’d go home with my second son to sleep. But one night, my son couldn’t sleep; he was just behaving strangely. When we got to the hospital the next day, he continued the strange behaviour; he would raise his hands and roll over and hit his head on the baby’s cot. The nurses and matron were asking him if he was angry that his mother put to bed but he kept on behaving in the same manner. Nobody knew what was wrong. Later the doctor told me that my son was not responding to pain. But a bigger shock awaited me, as he soon told me that he had gone into coma. I went to him, touched him, pushed him, calling his name, but no response.  He was still breathing but was now on oxygen like his brother. The doctor thereafter told us to pray to God, but within 15 minutes, he died.”
Asked how he managed to buy drugs and even pay for oxygen, Mr Nwankwo said: “People and patients in the hospital were helping us with money.”
Like his wife, Charles Nwankwo also started out with great hope and potential. He was a student of Banking and Finance at the Lagos State Polytechnic, until lack of funds forced him out. He recalled that his first love was Law, which he wanted to study at the University of Lagos. “If I have another opportunity, I will go back to school because I believe that half education is very dangerous.”

'Convert To Islam If You Want Protection In Prison' - Muslim Gang Tells Paedophile Footballer Adam Johnson

Convicted sex offender and former Sunderland footballer, Adam Johnson, has been told to convert to Islam by Muslim criminals in prison for protection, it has been claimed.
The British player was offered protection by Islamic inmates after several other convicts allegedly threatened to slash his throat.
In helping him with protection, the Muslim gang said the 30-year-old must convert to Islam as part of the deal.
Sources have told the Daily Star that Johnson has been spotted praying but has yet to join the religion.
One source said: 'At first he was unwilling to take up the offer because he thought he was going to get a transfer out of Moorland, but that’s a non-starter.
'Now it looks like he is having second thoughts because he doesn’t have any friends who are tough enough to watch his back and prison can be a very lonely place if someone is out to get you.'
Johnson is said to have pleaded to be moved from Moorland Prison, in South Yorkshire, but his request has been rejected.
The former Manchester City winger was found guilty of sexual activity with a 15-year-old fan and was sentenced to six years in prison in March 2016.

Pharmacists Council Of Nigeria Seals 397 Drug Stores In Abia State

Deputy Director of Enforcement, Stephen Esumobi says the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) has sealed 397 drug stores in Abia State for various offences.

He said the action was in a bid to ensure rational distribution and dispersion of safe and quality medicines to the public.  According to him, the situation in Abia State is worrisome as most of the premises visited during the enforcement exercise cannot be guaranteed and pose danger to the public.

“What we have seen in Abia State is that many of the premises are not registered and the products are stored in an environment that is not suitable. Some of these products are sensitive to light and can be easily degraded by light and most of the products are not stored at the right temperature. The implication is that many of these products even though they are not expired are already degraded and are no longer good enough for human consumption. Many of the people handling these drugs do not have the requisite knowledge and cannot even pronounce the drugs they are selling” he said.

He also added that many of the stores in Umuahia, the state capital were operating in an unhealthy environment with others selling expired drugs, warning that any pharmacist involved in any form of malpractice would face severe sanction.

A total of 441 premises were visited during the exercise and 360 patent medicine stores, 37 pharmacies were sealed for operating without registration with the PCN among other offences.  Twenty-seven premises were also issued compliance directives for poor documentation and failure to produce their licenses

Bonang said “For instance, Tiwa Savage is the only popular female voice in Nigeria that is greatly celebrated, while the rest of the country honours and recognises men more. This is an area of observation that can be more elevated.  Our (South Africa’s) industry is far much kinder to our female counterparts and genuinely celebrates them and allows them to shine'

Rescue Of Igbonla Students: Lagos Vows To Beef Up Security In Schools

Read the press statement below...

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has assured that the government would utilise the academic break to reinforce security in all schools in the State, especially in the suburb and riverine areas to prevent any incidence of kidnapping.

The Governor, who spoke through the State’s Deputy Governor, Dr. Mrs. Oluranti Adebule while receiving the six students of Igbonla Model College who were rescued on Friday, said he remains totally committed to ensuring the security of all residents especially students and would spare nothing to ensure that schools remain safe from all forms of crime and criminality.

He said: “The issue of security is a social contract that we have signed with the people of Lagos and we would ensure that we do not disappoint. As far as our schools are concerned, we are going back to the drawing board to ensure that all that need to be done in terms of securing our schools before the next academic session is done”.

Governor Ambode, who commended the collaborative efforts by security agencies from Lagos and Ondo States, specially thanked the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo for his interventions towards ensuring the safe rescue of the students.

Presenting the rescued students to the media, he said they would be debriefed and taken through comprehensive medical tests so as to ensure that they recover from the trauma they might have passed through while in the custody of their abductors.

Also speaking, Ondo State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu commended Acting President Yemi Osinbajo and Governor Ambode for working tirelessly on the matter, saying that the duo demonstrated uncommon interest in the whole process leading to the safe return of the students.

Akeredolu said he never believed the kidnappers could be hibernating in Ondo creeks until he was told about a month ago during the National Economic Council (NEC) Meeting in Abuja by Osinbajo, and later Governor Ambode, while he immediately deployed his deputy, Mr Alfred Agboola who is from the riverine areas in Ondo, to take up the matter.

He said Agboola immediately swung into action and worked with the Delta State Deputy Governor, as well as security agencies to ensure safe return of the students.

While acknowledging the role of Governor Ambode, Akeredolu said: “I must commend Governor Ambode for his commitment to the rescue of the students. At the meeting of Western Nigeria Governors’ forum held in Abeokuta on Monday, we discussed the issue of the students and Governor Ambode mentioned the issue of joint security patrol in our riverine areas.

“He (Governor Ambode) was very committed to it and he expressed readiness to support with the needed resources.

Throughout the days the students were in captivity, the Lagos State Governor never kept his eyes off the ball and he kept working on it until today that we have the students back,” Akeredolu said.

On his part, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni said 20 of the kidnappers died during gun duel with security forces, while eight policemen and four civilian volunteers sustained injuries.

He, however, disclosed that one civilian volunteer unfortunately died in the process of rescuing the students.

The CP also said that a suspect, who attempted to capitalize on the situation to swindle the parents of the students by asking that they should bring ransom to Abeokuta, was arrested and is currently in police custody.

Besides, the police chief praised the South West Governors for demonstrating clear commitment to combat crime in the region, saying that the communiqué issued in Abeokuta with respect to creation of Joint Security Task Force for the region, is already yielding positive result

Nigeria's Rangers FC Declares Another Player Missing Two Weeks After One Went Missing!

The management of Rangers International Football Club in Enugu, has declared one of their strikers, Daniel Etor, missing.
The club’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Mr. Foster Chime, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Enugu that the player absented himself from training and providing his services without permission.
“Daniel Etor’s whereabouts now is unknown and efforts to locate or communicate with him had been futile.
“The player, according to the club’s coaches, alighted from the official club bus on their way back from Ilorin, where they played league match with ABS FC of Ilorin the previous day and eloped without trace,’’ he said.
Chime said that the management had on Thursday sent a letter to that effect to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for its information.
He said the management had decided that the player’s salary might be withheld, while considering other punitive measures against him for flouting the camp rules and travelling out without official permission.
Chime recalled that Etor had earlier been fined N20,000 by the club’s Chief Coach, Innocent Agbo, for breaking the camp’s rules.
He said that Etor then left the camp and later came back at mid-night by jumping the fence a day before the team travelled on July 22 to Ilorin for the league match against ABS FC on July 23.
This comes two weeks after one of their midfielders, Christian Madu was equally declared missing
