New reports claims ISIS blew up the historic great Mosque of al-Nuri and its leaning minaret in Mosul.
However,
ISIS through its news agency, said US warplanes were responsible for
destroying the historic mosque that has towered over Mosul for over
800-years.
US officials have since denied
the claims by ISIS saying it's "1,000% false." while Iraq Prime Minister
Haider al-Abadi said the ISIS act amounts to "an official announcement
of their defeat" as Iraqi military commanders confirm that militants
blew the mosque up after troops closed in.
The
great al-Nuri mosque was built by the Seljuk ruler Nur al-Din al-Zangi
Atabeg and completed in 1172. It's most notable feature is the Al Hadba
minaret, which leans 253 centimeters (100 inches). The Mosque was
dismantled and reassembled in 1942, but the minaret remained one of the
few original elements
This
morning, friends and family members gathered in Ohio to say goodbye to
an American student who died just six days after being returned to the
United States in a coma following 17 months in captivity in North
Korea.
22 year old Otto Warmbier was arrested
in North Korea while visiting as a tourist in 2016.
He was brought back to the
United States last week with severe brain damage, in what doctors
described as state of 'unresponsive wakefulness,' and died on Monday.
Thousands
turned out to pay their respects to Otto at his funeral which held at
the at Pendery Center for the Arts a hall which has a capacity of about
2,100 but may people couldn't get inside because it was already filled
to capacity.
After the service which lasted for about an hour his dad led a procession to Oak Hill Cemetery where he was buried.
An Australian MP addressed Parliament while breastfeeding her baby. It
will be the first time ever such will happen in Australia. Larissa
Waters, a Greens Party member from Queensland, Australia, stood to
address the chamber, with her 14-week-old daughter, Alia Joy, latched
onto her breast, while the mother spoke about black lung disease, a
condition affecting coal miners.
This will not be the first time
the MP is taking her baby with her to Parliament neither will it be the
first time she's breastfed the infant in Parliament. Earlier on in May
2017, she had tweeted a photo of her breastfeeding her daughter in
Australia's Parliament and since then, she regularly takes the child
with her to the Australia's Senate, or Upper House. However, it is the
first time Waters has ever breastfed while moving a motion in Parliament
with all eyes on her.
The MP's decision to breastfeed while
moving the motion was met with smiles from her colleagues. Soon after,
she shared the photo on Twitter and wrote:
"First time I've had
to move a Senate motion while breastfeeding! And my partner in crime
moved her own motion just before mine, bless her."
There was,
however, someone who did not agree with her and the person sent her a
message which Larissa shared on her Twitter timeline.
"Not a good
look you may think it's clever but trust me Waters will be remembered
in Politics as the dumb Bitch with the big tits with and ego that was 5
feet in front of her brains all the best next time round she is a goner
but she is already aware off that hence the exhibition Regards (sic)"
In
2009, Sarah Hanson-Young, a Greens MP, was forced to remove her
two-year-old child from the chamber and afterwards, the toddler was
heard crying just outside the chamber doors. Then in 2015, Kelly
O’Dwyer, a Liberal MP and cabinet minister, was told by the government
whip to express more milk to ensure she did not miss votes in
Parliament.
However, Parliament changed its rules last year to allow mothers breastfeed in the chambers, Hence, Larissa Waters' freedom.
Below is the video of Ms Waters breastfeeding while addressing the Chamber.
At least 29 people
have been killed and 60 wounded in a car bomb blast outside a bank in
the southern Afghan province of Helmand, hospital officials say.
Police told the BBC the bomb was detonated at the gate of the New Kabul Bank branch in Lashkar Gah.
Civilians and members of the security forces are reportedly among casualties.
There
was no immediate claim of responsibility but Taliban and Islamic State
militants have carried out deadly attacks in recent months.
The head of the hospital in Lashkar Gah, Mawladad Tabedar, told BBC Afghan the number of casualties might rise. Earlier, Tolo News reported that armed attackers had entered the bank and engaged in a gun battle with security forces.
"It
happened at a time when civilians and officials had lined up outside
the bank to collect their salaries," a police spokesman, Salam Afghan,
told AFP news agency.
Bank buildings have been repeatedly attacked
in recent years in Afghanistan as civilians and military personnel
receive their monthly salaries from them.
A spokesman for Afghan
Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah tweeted that most of the victims were
"innocent souls who were shopping for Eid".
"Their joyful moments turned into nightmare," Javid Faisal said.
There has been a series of attacks in Afghanistan in recent weeks, since the Taliban launched its so-called spring offensive.
On
Sunday, five police officers were killed and about 30 people, most of
them civilians, were injured in a suicide bomb attack in the eastern
city of Gardez.
On 31 May a huge bombing in central Kabul killed
more than 150 people, the deadliest militant attack in the country since
US-led forces ousted the Taliban from power in 2001.
Earlier that month another New Kabul Bank branch was attacked in Gardez, killing at least three people. The insurgents control swathes of Helmand province, whose capital is Lashkar Gah.
In March the crucial district of Sangin fell to the militants after a year-long battle. Musa Qala was captured last year.

An Irish man who died after a road collision in Thailand on Tuesday night has been named locally.
John Malone, who is in his 30s and originally from Co Longford, was working as an English teacher in Thailand.
The school where Mr Malone was teaching, The Learning Centre, Chiangrai, posted a touching tribute to him, along with a video.
"We have lost today one of our beloved teachers, John Malone.
"John was at the heart of TLC team, helping in every way with his
usual smile and happy attitude. You will always be in our hearts. RIP
John," it said.
The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed it is aware of the incident and is providing consular assistance.
Thailand's king at an official ceremony in Bangkok - he still spends much of his time abroad
The authorities in Germany say the King of Thailand was unhurt when two teenage boys shot at him in the dark with an air pistol.
King
Maha Vajiralongkorn - who spends much of his time in Germany - was
cycling late at night with his entourage near Munich airport.
The boys - aged 13 and 14 - shot at him from the window of a house in the town of Erding on 10 June, prosecutors say.
It's not clear if they hit the king but no-one was injured.
King Vajiralongkorn, 64, took the throne last year following the death of his father.
"As
of now it is not certain that the king himself was hit," a spokesman
for the local prosecutor's office, Thomas Rauscher, told BBC Thai.
"All that is known is that the king was part of a group of cyclists and that shots were fired at this group."
He said shots were also fired later when the group drove past in the king's car.
"The total number of shots is as yet unknown. We know however that more than one shot was fired."
It's not clear if the boys knew who they were shooting at.
The
14-year-old is being investigated on suspicion of attempted bodily
harm, although the king declined to press charges. The 13-year-old is
too young to face prosecution under German laws.
"The king was not
interested in taking any legal action against the boys… But in Germany,
it is not up to the victim to decide [about the charges]," said Mr
Rauscher.
The monarch's personal guards are understood to have called the police.
The king has two villas on Lake Starnberg, about 60km (37.5 miles) away from Erding, Bild Zeitung reports.
He will not be formally crowned until some time after the cremation of his father, which is expected later this year.
Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was widely seen as a pillar of stability during seven decades of political turmoil in Thailand.
But his son is yet to enjoy the same level of popularity, and has spent much of his life abroad.
Married
and divorced three times, he has seven children. Most ordinary Thais
know only a few details about who he is and how he lives his life.
But
many will remember his interest in cycling. In 2015 thousands of Thai
cyclists joined the then-crown prince in a ride through Bangkok in
honour of his mother, Queen Sirikit.
It was the first event to be publicly led by the prince and served to underline that he was the undisputed heir to the throne.
The Federal Government’s plan to attract investment in modular
refineries as part of efforts to boost local refining capacity, gained
momentum yesterday with an Indonesian firm, PT Intim Perkasa Nigeria
Ltd, a subsidiary of PT Intim Perkasa, Indonesia, indicating interest to
build a refinery in Nigeria.
Mr. Adi Hartadi, the Head of Investor Relations of PTPP (Persero) Tbk,
partners to PT Intim Perkasa Nigeria Ltd, who disclosed this in Abuja
during a business meeting with the Group Managing Director of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru,
stated that the proposed refinery would be located in Akwa Ibom State.
The refinery, a modular one, will have refining capacity for 10,000
barrels per stream day. Hartadi stated that their company has more than
50 years of experience in construction and engineering and it was
desirous of diversifying into downstream operations in Nigeria.
Responding, the NNPC Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru, who was
represented by the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Refineries and
Petrochemicals, Engr. Anigbor Kragha, stated that NNPC placed high
premium on investment in the nation’s refining sector.
The GMD stated that the Corporation had a Greenfield Refinery Department
that specialized in new refinery projects and also provided
professional support to potential investors in modular refinery in the
country in line with the Federal Government policy on modular
refineries.
He explained that the country’s three refineries with a combined
capacity of 445,000bpd could not function optimally over the years due
to lack of investment, adding that NNPC would give necessary support to
the Indonesian Company interest in the downstream sector.
“On our end, we have embarked on ambitious plan to fast-track programmes
to restore our capacity utilization from 30 per cent to a minimum of 90
per cent in the next 24 months. To do that, we are working on securing
financing from third parties, not just funding, but also technical
expertise to help us increase our performance to world class levels that
they should be,” Baru stated.
He explained that given Nigeria’s expected population, by 2025, more
than 40 million litres of petrol would be required for local
consumption, adding that the combined capacity of the nation’s 3
refineries would only be able to satisfy just above 50 per cent of the
projected local demand. He expressed optimism that with this kind of
investment coming steadily, Nigeria could serve as a regional hub of
refined petroleum products for West Africa and beyond.
He called on the investors to be mindful of clean fuel policy across
African countries and ensure that they produce fuels that meet
specification with regards to sulphur content.
Earlier, Dwiyatna Widinugraha, Third Secretary for Economic Affairs,
Indonesian Embassy in Nigeria and the leader of the Indonesian
delegation, stated that the visit was a follow-up to the earlier visit
by the Indonesian envoy to NNPC, the bilateral meeting between the
Indonesian Trade Minister with his Nigerian counterpart as well as the
visit of Indonesian Prime Minister to Nigeria.
It would be recalled that the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr.
Harry Purwanto, had recently expressed interest in purchasing more crude
oil from Nigeria during a courtesy call to the NNPC GMD, Maikanti Baru.

A memorial for 17 year old Muslim teenager, Nabra Hassanen, who
was killed by 22-year-old Darwin Martinez Torres, an illegal immigrant
in Virginia on Sunday, was reportedly set on fire on Wednesday in
Washington, D.C. The memorial was located in Northwest Washington's
DuPont Circle where Vigils for Hassanen, were organized in D.C. and
across the country.
District fire officials responded to the incident early Wednesday morning.
Hassanen and her friends were returning from a Ramadan prayer session
when she was kidnapped, beaten and killed by Torres in what police
believe to be an incident of road rage.
Authorities arrested Torres for the death of Hassanen.
Darwin Martinez Torres s being held on a second-degree murder charge.
Police said he beat her with a baseball bat early on Sunday, drove off
with her in his car and assaulted her again , they have not said how,
before dumping her body in a pond near her home. His public defender’s
office has declined to comment.
At her funeral on Wednesday an overflow area was not enough to
accommodate people who came in solidarity. The crowd overwhelmed
suburban traffic and cars jammed into neighborhood streets more than a
mile away to park
The
trial of Alex Badeh, a former Chief of Air Staff, continued Wednesday
with the nineteenth prosecution witness, Abubakar Madaki, telling a
Federal High Court, Abuja that investigations into a number of
properties linked to him exposed how several millions of naira was
diverted from Nigeria Air Force, NAF’s accounts for personal enrichment,
and properties whose ownership he tried to conceal. Madaki,
an operative of the EFCC, while being led in evidence by the
prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, told Justice Okon Abang that
investigations were carried out on a number of properties, linked to
Badeh, including a shopping mall, and particularly a property located at
19, Kumasi Crescent, in Abuja. He said:
“In the course of our investigation,
Kabiru Salawu, owner of Platinun Universal Company told us that the
Certificate of Occupancy, C of O of No 19. Kumasi Crescent bearing the
name of his company, originally belonged to Alex Badeh Jr, (son of
Badeh).
Badeh Jr, however, returned the original C of O and the agreement to him, and instructed him to lay claim to the property. In
the course of investigating the property, we also discovered that Simi
Mohammed, a paymaster with NAF, paid over N300 million in dollar
equivalent to Mustapha Yarima, managing director of Ryte Builders
Nigeria Limited.”
Yarima,
according to Madaki, was paid the money to begin construction of a
shopping mall, which was traced to Badeh. He revealed that “an estimate
of N950 million to N1.2 billion for the construction of the shopping
complex was submitted by Yarima. As
work progressed, Yarima regularly briefed Salisu Yishau (a former NAF
director, finance/account), who in turn updated Badeh, and when the fund
was exhausted, Yishau invited him to meet Mohammed who subsequently
paid him from the NAF account. Subsequently,
payment to Ryte Builders Nigeria Limited resumed, and a total of N860
million was received from the NAF, and as soon as the money got finished
work slowed down.”
He
added that investigations showed that Badeh “was not happy with the
slow pace of work, and summoned a meeting between Yishau and Yarima, in
his house. It
was at the meeting that Badeh told them that henceforth, he was going
to provide fund through his son, Alex Badeh Jr,” Madaki said.
He
further testified that after the meeting Yarima received the sum of
N102 million from Vetiva Capital Investment. According to him,
investigations then shifted to the company and its owner was invited for
interrogation.
“Vetiva
Capital Investment was represented by Olawolu Mudashiru, son of late
Commodore Mudashiru, and he confirmed payment by the company totaling
N102 million authorized payment on behalf of Badeh Jr,” he said, adding
that Badeh Jr, claimed that “Vetiva will have 70 per cent interest in
the proposed restaurant.” Madaki
further testified that Yarima claimed that not long after he received
N102 million from Vetiva Capital Investment, for the conclusion of the
construction work, there was a new development. Yarima
said Yishau called him that Badeh, had sent his lawyer and given
instruction that the property which was in the name of Ryte Builders
Technologies Limited be transferred to another name,” he said
According to him, one Timothy Mudi, a lawyer to Badeh, “carried out the direction, and took the document to Badeh.” He
further added that based on the new information received during
investigation that one Umar Hussein, a lawyer, brought some documents
and handed them over to Mudi in the presence of Yishau, he decided to
call Badeh Jr for questioning.
“One of my operatives called him, only for
him to tell us that he was in the United State and was due in the
country in a week’s time,” he said, noting that he was put on watch
list, and letters sent to relevant organization.
We also obtained a forfeiture order on the property at 19, Kumasi Crescent, and six or seven other properties,” Madaki added.
Madaki further stated that, both Mudi and Badeh Jr called Yarima to claim the property.
“In the course of investigation, we got
Hussein’s phone number and invited him for questioning, and he told us
that his boss Badeh wanted to have a befitting retiring home in
Maitama,” he said.
Further hearing in the matter continues on June 22, 2017.
Badeh
is standing trial along with Iyalikam Nigeria Limited on a 10-count
charge bordering on money laundering, criminal breach of trust and
corruption to the tune of N3.97billion brought against him by the EFCC
As it's expected for women in Tunisia to be virgins until when are
married, young Tunisian women are now having hymen reconstruction
surgery to avoid being sent back to their parents after the wedding.
According to BBC, young Tunisian women are turning to hymenoplasty, a
short procedure that promises to reconstruct her virginity surgically.
The young women save and spend as much as &400 for the procedure to
prevent future shame.
One woman who has decided to turn to science to regain her lost
virginity is 28-year-old woman Yasmine. Yasmine lost her virginity while
living abroad to one man but now is afraid her husband will find out
she is not a virgin after they get married.
Though she has agreed to the surgery, she considers this procedure a lie
and one day the husband might suspect or find out about the sham.
"I consider this to be deception and I'm really worried," says Jasmine whose wedding is in two months.
BBC reporter Sihem Hassaini who accompanied Jasmine to the clinic for
the procedure was shocked to discover a bunch of other women waiting for
the 30-minute procedure to reconstruct their hymen.
Jasmine took months to save for the procedure while keeping every detail secret from her family.
According to Rashid, the doctor to carry out the surgery on Jasmine,
most of his young patients are driven by the fear of bringing shame to
their family and relatives when discovered they are not virgins.
The doctor said though many doctors refuse to do the surgery, he does it
because he disagrees with those who make virginity a sort of sacred
thing.
The annoyed doctor said he blamed the male-dominated society that hides in some religious principles.
“I mean it when I say its male dominance and I'll continue to wage an all-out war against it," he says.
Tunisia is regarded as a leader in women's rights in North Africa but
religion and tradition here dictate that young women have to remain
virgins until they are married.
There is also a provision in Tunisian law for divorce in cases where women are discovered not to be virgins
Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha and his Oyo state counterpart,
Abiola Ajimobi, at the meeting with acting president Yemi Osinbajo in
Abuja on Wednesday.
Paris Saint-Germain and Argentine winger, Angel Di Maria has accepted a
one-year suspended prison sentence and will pay a total of €2 million in
back-taxes and fines for committing tax fraud in Spain, according to
media reports.
The former Manchester United star admitted to two counts of tax fraud
after an agreement was reached between the former Real Madrid
midfielder's lawyers and the public prosecutor on Wednesday.
Spain's prosecutor's office alleged back in November that Di Maria
failed to declare €1.298m in earnings between 2012 and 2013, while on
the books of Real Madrid, by ceding his image rights to an offshore
company, Sunpex Corporation Inc, based in Panama.
In Spain, sentences less than two years are normally suspended unless
the individual has a prior conviction. Hence, Di Maria will avoid jail
and pay a fine of €2 million
This follows other recent high-profile cases in Spain, with Cristiano
Ronaldo and Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho having been recently
accused of tax fraud.
Both player and coach have subsequently denied that they defrauded the Spanish government
Over 300 houses are affected by the flooding that accompanied the
Tuesday five-hour downpour in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, the
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said yesterday.
Its Southwest Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Yakubu Sulaimon, spoke during an
inspection of the affected area in company of Oyo State Deputy Governor
Moses Alake Adeyemo.
Sulaimon said the agency visited the state capital to gather
first-hand information and see the havoc the flooding wreaked in the
city.
He said the agency had provided materials to affected residents through the State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA).
The NEMA chief said his assessments had revealed loss of livelihood
of many people, adding that property estimated at millions of naira were
lost to the flooding.
Sulaimon said: “We have seen means of livelihood lost. Property worth
millions of naira have been lost to the flood and we have made notes of
all the buildings involved and the affected families. Soon, NEMA will,
in its usual way, come to their aid through the state government.
“People should stop building on floodplains and they should endeavour
to clear their drainages. Most of these buildings did not observe the
normal 30-metre setback regulation. Town planning laws are not complied
with. These are the consequences.”
Adeyemo said structures on waterways and floodplains obstructing the
free flow of rivers may give way to forestall loss of lives and property
to flooding in Ibadan.
The places visited include Orogun, Shasha Alfonso, Egberi and Oki Rivers in Olodo, and Onipepeye, all within Ibadan.
Adeyemo admonish residents to desist from habits that cause flooding.
He noted that the soul of every citizen and their property were precious and would be protected by the government.
Apart from the ongoing dredging of river channels, he said that that
other preventive measures would be taken to prevent the ugly experience
of the past when flooding caused monumental loss of lives and property
in Ibadan.
Ajimobi said: “When the government says don’t build on waterways or
river course, some people always say that the government is wicked. This
(flooding) is the result of disobedience to such directive.
Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice
Abubakar Malami, reaffirmed yesterday his commitment to the
anti-corruption war.
He said authorising the appeal filed against the acquittal of Senate
President Bukola Saraki by the Code of Conduct Tribunal, is another
evidence of his commitment.
The Federal Government on Tuesday filed 11 grounds of appeal the
Court of Appeal and described the CCT’s no case judgment as
unreasonable.
In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity,
Mr. Salihu Isah and the Special Assistant to the President on
Prosecution (AGF Office), Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla. Malami debunked a
statement credited to a member of the Prof. Itse Sagay-led Presidential
Advisory Committee Against Corruption, (PACAC) Prof. Femi Odekunle,
which questioned his commitment to the anti-corruption fight.
Malami said in spite of recent judicial setbacks suffered by the
anti-corruption war, he remained “resolutely, painstakingly, doggedly,
purposefully and determinedly with all the constitutional and legal
arsenals at the disposal of the Federal Government of Nigeria”.
The statement said: “The Honourable Attorney of the Federation wishes
to assure Nigerians that despite some recent setbacks recorded in some
of the cases involving politically-exposed people; that the war against
corruption is fully on course.
“It shall be fought resolutely, painstakingly, doggedly, purposefully
and determinedly with all the constitutional and legal arsenals at the
disposal of the Federal Government of Nigeria.
“The Federal Government is more than ever before committed towards
the complete eradication of the scourge of corruption and graft in the
country.
“Those in a hurry to condemn due to the temporary setbacks recorded
lately should tarry awhile because a legal process is deemed not
concluded until it terminates at the Supreme Court which is the highest
court of arbitration in Nigeria”.
The statement added: “To say that the Honourable Attorney General of
the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN frowns at the statement is an
understatement. In fact, he is highly disappointed that such accusation
and statement could be made by those who ought to know better.
“The Honourable Attorney General of the Federation is saddened and
flummoxed at the attempt to cast aspersion on his integrity, dedication
and commitment to the war against corruption which undoubtedly is one of
the major cornerstones of the present administration.
“There is no gainsaying that the incumbent Attorney General of the
Federation has shown and demonstrated so much passion, drive, will and
enthusiasm in prosecution of transgressors of the law ever seen in the
annals of this country.
“The truth of the matter is that the Honourable Attorney General of
the Federation is totally, fully and completely committed, dedicated and
supports the war against corruption in all its form and ramification.”
“Towards this end, the Honourable Attorney General of the Federation
since his assumption of office has initiated numerous reforms and
programs to drive the war against corruption including the recently
launched National Anti-Corruption Strategy, 2017.
“The National Anti-Corruption Strategy plan is a five-year strategic
plan to combat corruption and corrupt tendencies in the country to the
barest minimum. It is the first of its plan in the history of the
country.”
The Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners has just announced that O.J.
Simpson who is currently serving time in a Nevada prison for a 2008 Las
Vegas robbery and kidnapping conviction will be eligible for a parole
hearing on July 20 in Carson City, announced on Tuesday, June 20. The proceeding will be the second hearing held for
the former football star since he was sentenced to as much as 33 years
for his role in a bungled attempt to recover memorabilia from his
storied sports career.
If he's granted parole at the hearing, he will not be eligible for
release on October 1, state parole officials have said. Simpson was
acquitted of the June 12, 1994, murder of his wife, Nicole Brown
Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman in the “Trial of the Century” that
divided Americans sharply along racial lines.
Both men are constantly attacking each other in the media and their
supporters also engage in war of words on social media. They met
yesterday
in Aso Rock and from this picture, looks like they are cool again. Like
they say, in politics, there is no permanent enemy or permanent friend.i think that is good for Nigeria
A brave traffic police sub-inspector, ML Nijalingappa, who was deployed to the busy Bengaluru’s Trinity Circle on Saturday won the heart of many when he stopped the convoy of the President of India to make way for an ambulance.
The
convoy was leading President Pranab Mukherjee to the inauguration of
Metro’s Green Line in the City when the sub-inspector directed his
colleagues to help the ambulance make its way towards a private hospital
near HAL through the traffic-heavy road.
According
to an ANI report, the Bengaluru Police later announced a reward for the
policeman for making way for an ambulance during the convoy movement of
President Pranab Mukherjee.
Praveen Sood, the Commissioner of Police, tweeted, “The policeman who took such initiative to be rewarded. Well done!
The Joint Action Committee, JAC, of tertiary institutions has just
called off the five months strike by lecturers of tertiary institutions
in Kogi State after signing Memorandum of Understanding with the state
government on Wednesday June 21, 2017.
Announcing
the decision at the Ministry of Education, Lokoja, spokesperson of JAC,
Moses Balogun, said the strike was called off due to the intervention
of the governing councils of the tertiary institutions.
Balogun also
said the move was to enable the state government address all the issues
that led to the strike, saying “in view of the agreement, JAC shall
suspend its strike for four weeks from the midnight of June 21 to create a window for government to act on the agreement reached.”
Speaking on behalf of state government, Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Tolorunleke Sunday,
said Governor Yahaya Bello had mapped out modalities to ensure that
schools programmes run uninterrupted during his tenure, promising that
such industrial action by the lecturers will not occur again
Suspected members of the kidnapping syndicate that abducted six students
from the Igbonla Model college in Epe, Lagos state on May 25th, have
written to the management and staff of Lagos State Model College,
Kankon, Badagry in Lagos state, vowing to kidnap some of their
principals and students of the school.
According to reports, the kidnappers sent the letters to the junior and secondary school principals of the school two weeks ago.
They pasted the letters on the door leading to the
administrative offices of both principals. The letters which contained
the same message, read in part
"Kidnappers are visiting the school the same way we did at Igbonla, Epe.
We are going to capture three pupils from senior school and three from
junior school. We are kidnapping both principals. We are coming in two
days time. No security put in place will stop us from gaining entry and
fulfilling our mission as stated in this letter. Be expecting us".
The school management called for security and there was maximum protection in the school.
However this reportedly reduced after a while. Parents and students of
the school are currently in fear due to the reduction in security
personnel in the school.
Meanwhile the state commissioner for Information, Steve Ayorinde, has
confirmed that indeed a letter of such was received but however added
that the state government is not certain it was a joke or not.
He added that efforts have been put in place to ensure the safety of the
students in the school.
Recall that the suspected kidnappers of six male students at the Igbonla
Model College in Epe, had earlier written to the school informing them
of their attack before carrying it out on May 25th. The students have
still not been rescued.
As Queen Elizabeth of England gets older (she's 91) a lot of people will
think the other Royals would be looking forward to taking over when she
abdicates the throne but this is actually not the case as revealed by
Prince Harry in a recent interview.
Speaking to US magazine,
Newsweek, Harry, who is fifth in line to the throne said he did not
think his brother William or even their father, Charles wants to be
king.
Harry asks: "Is there any one of the Royal Family who
wants to be king or queen?" Then answers the question himself, saying:
"I don't think so, but we will carry out our duties at the right time."
Harry
has always made it known that he has no interest to the throne but it's
news that his brother and father also feel the same way. He, however,
insisted that though they may not want it, Britain and other countries
still need "the magic" of the monarchy.
He later adds: "The
monarchy is a force for good and we want to carry on the positive
atmosphere that the Queen has achieved for over 60 years, but we won't
be trying to fill her boots. We are involved in modernising the British
monarchy. We are not doing this for ourselves but for the greater good
of the people. The Queen has been fantastic in letting us choose. She
tells us to take our time."
Harry also made another revelation
during the interview. Recalling his mother's burial in 1997, Harry
criticised his family's decision to make him walk behind his mother's
coffin as a 12-year-old, saying:
"My mother had just died, and I
had to walk a long way behind her coffin, surrounded by thousands of
people watching me while millions more did on television. I don't think
any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don't
think it would happen today."
Both Prince Harry and Prince
William have been criticised for not stepping into their roles as Royals
and getting involved in engagements required of them as Royals, the way
their parents and grandparents did but as the Queen and her husband the
Duke of Edinburgh get older, the brothers are beginning to shoulder
more responsibilities. Harry spoke about this in front of Kensington
Palace.
He says: "I am now fired up and energised and love
charity stuff, meeting people and making them laugh. I sometimes still
feel I am living in a goldfish bowl, but I now manage it better. I still
have a naughty streak too, which I enjoy and is how I relate to those
individuals who have got themselves into trouble."
Several times
during the interview, Harry stressed that he aches to be something other
than just "Prince Harry" but that he also is in a rush to make
something of his life and make a difference.
"I feel there is
just a smallish window when people are interested in me before
(William's children Prince George and Princess Charlotte) take over, and
I've got to make the most of it," he says.
He revealed that he's
partnering with William and his wife Kate, to modernise the monarchy.
He also praised his late mother, Princess Diana, for playing a huge part
in showing him an "ordinary'"life. He says that because of that, he and
William both have a normal life and that he even does his shopping
himself, to the amazement of many. He added that if he's lucky enough to
have kids of his own, he will ensure they have a relatively normal
life.
"Even if I was king, I would do my own shopping," he said
